"I go t slowed by Ca rson, and th en Manl ey, who had nowhere to go, hit me fro m be h ind ," said Mu sgra ve, w ho restarted in last. Ma nley came down the hill in third, w it h Fow ler in fou rth. Carson, not yet comfortable with the pace a nd mak in g _mistakes, had pressure com ing fro m Manley as they headed to the north sectio n. When they appea red from Bud's Creek, a favo rite passing spot, Manley was in second. Du bach held the lead at the com pletion of lap one, foUowed by Manley, Carson , Fo w ler, Mur r ay, Gilbert, Ward, Telford and [onnie Deremo. At the scoring sec tio n, jon Za hr t went d own a nd sucked up Rick Dittus. At the same time, up ahead in front of the bleachers, Dererno washed ou t in the com e r before th e tabletop and Rober t go t tangled up with Dererno's fallen KIM. "I s p u n th e tir e o n the s ta rt," sai d Robert, "a nd then I crashed on the first lap, so I had to wo rk throu gh mid pack ." Thi s enabled Keh oe, Carl Hyde and john Merw in to ge t aro u nd a head of Robert. "Ad rian and I had our own battle, and in two laps we passed each other th ree times," said Keh oe. After getti ng a better driv e o ff the bowl tum in the canyon, Fowler went by Carson for third. Kehoe worked around Ward on the downhill and then passed a slowing Mu rray two turns later. Du bach, meanwhil e, h ad already ope ned up a six-second lead on Manley owed by by the end of the second lap, foU Fowler, Ca rs on, Gilbert, Kehoe, Ward a nd Telfo rd. Af ter his ear lie r mi s hap, Robert got by Merwin and Hyd e to take over nin th. Gilbert once again let Kehoe get a wheel on the inside of the hard leftthat leads to the uphill. Kehoe set up Carson by being on the outside of the lefthand U-t urn af ter the scoring section . Then, as the two came toward the bleachers, Kehoe wa s on the right side of Carson and controlled the inside of the next corner and took over fourth. Robert outjumped Ward going down the hill for seventh. On the next circuit, Kehoe caug ht up wit h Fowler and tried the same move he used on Carson. However , as they entered the Ll-turn, Fowler went from the ins ide to the ou tsid e to take Kehoe's line away. Kehoe foun d a smoo ther line throu gh the sand pi t and finally disposed of Fowl er. Robert was stUl making progress and passed Gilbert for sixth. During the next two laps, the leaders remained the same, but both Kehoe an d Rob ert were still riding s tro ng, w hile Dubach enjoyed a healthy lead . Carson settled into a good pace a nd bega n putting pressure on Fowler , while Kehoe caught up with Manley on the eighth lap . Kehoe made the move on Manl ey at the start straightaway an d, by the time they came down Ani mal Leap, Keh oe had ta ken second, 15 seconds behind Dubach. Robe rt also moved up the field, get ting a better drive on the uphill to pass Carson for fifth. Luck would not be Mth Manley on th e white-flag la p , a s his Kawasaki died on the top of the hill, the result of an empty fuel tank. Dub ach rode to the second-moto win, .' Mar k Flesia, Ward and Greg Young ruunded out the top 10. Ron Turn er, who in his yout hful days was called "Radical Ron," literally threw cau tion to the wind a nd came away with the win in Saturday and Sunday's Over 40 Exp erts. Gusty w ind s on Saturda y w e re making so me riders tak e cau tion when jumping. Nevertheless, Turner - on a number of occasions - jum ped farther than anyone, using this to catch the competition. "It wa s wind y, bu t it didn't seem to effect me on the jumps, except for when some of the ride rs - l ike jones an d jorgensen - would jump short. I was afraid I would land on them ," said Turner. Tu rner pu lled the holesh ot for Sunday's first moto, followed by Chu ck Sun, former IT and dirt track racer Alex jorg ens e n , Rich Eierst edt a n d Brent Wallingsford. Bob Maxwell, who scored a fifth overall in Saturday' s race, went over the sid e of the ber m comi ng out of the canyon; which drop s d own about 25 feet. "I overjumped the double o ut of the canyon, and then the rider in front of me turn ed early into the co rner," Ma xw ell said. "1 had to avoid him and I went over the berm and ended up on the other side of the track, but I didn't fall down." jorgensen got around Sun coming ou t of the north section to tak e over second. Soon after, Sun lost control in a mud pudd le and the Russ Fletcher-tuned Husaberg shot out from und er him. After that, th e pos itions stayed the same for the next three laps , with Turner taking the win, followed by jorgensen, Eiersted!, Wallingsford and Mike Webb. Af ter ru nning a slow as 16th, Zoli Berenyi jr. worked his way back to seventh. Turner pulled the early lead again for the seco nd moto, followed by Su n a nd jorgen sen. Eiersted t moved around jorge nsen in the sa nd pi t for fourth. jorgensen; w ho kept try ing to find a way around Sun only to be passed by someone else, got by for fourth. T urne r's lea d over Bere n yi was reduced to thr ee bike lengths when Turner lost his sea t in front of the bleachers. Eierstedt lost a little ground to first and second wi th his Roll-offs malfunctioning and now had a pretty, clear streamer following him. Bcrenyi tried to pass Turner on the insid e left-hander that leads to the uphill, but bobbled . Bere nyi wo uld not be denied, ho wever, and as thev came out of Bud's Creek , he got a bett~r dri ve and went by Turner. Turner knew that he could let Berenyi go and get the overall. Back in the pack, Bob Casper moved ' past Gary jones to take over fifth, while Webb worked past Wallingsford for seventh. Berenyi took the moto win , wit h Turner in second taking his 77l st overall win, followed by Eierstedt, jorgensen, Casper, jones and Webb. 1:' Gten Helen Raceway San Bernardino, Cal ifornia Results: November 1-2, 1997 S<1Iturd<1lY 3O-t- PRO: 1.
