CHESTER, CT, OCT. 19
very now and then . Kevi n Hines
_ has to co me ou t and s how the
ne ig h bo rh oo d e n d uro r id ers
w ha t it would be like if he decided to
seriously co n test th e NETRA End uro
Series aga in , and, a t th e Cocka po nset
End uro, he once again proved his point.
With a rid e that came very close to totaling zero ov e r the 108-mil e, bone-dry
course, Hines drop ped a to tal of on ly
thre e to bea t seco nd pla ce by fo ur
points.
The Salmon River Coun ty Riders laid
out a course that took advantage of the
sho rt secti on s of wood s trail that we re
available around the encroaching suburbi a , as we ll as lon ger sections wi thi n
Coc ka po nset State Fo rest. The d evious
trail bosses cons tru cted a route sheet tha t
featured 29 rese ts and a cons istent 24mph speed average - a challenge for th e
compu ter-eq ui pped and a rea l trial for
the manua l tim ekee pers. Many of the
sections were barely a mile long, which
caused all sorts of trou ble for those who
were less Ulan attentive to their mi leage.
In spi te of this, there were very few bum
p o ints p osted - a testimony to th e
pati en ce of NETRA enduro rid ers.
Hines came out fast in the morning.
bu t appeared to be paci ng right alongside reignin g NETRA Enduro Champion Jason Cayer, who matched him score
for sco re th ro ugh th e sixth check. Both
d ro p ped a single point a t check three ,
and the n the fifth check was a somewhat
m a jo r poi n ts-take r, where C aye r
d ro pped 1:53 compared to Hines' 1:50.
After the sixth check, Hines decided to
tum it up, zero ing all but the final
check, while Cayer just missed the
flip at checks se ve n, nin e and 10.
The final check saw Hines sn eak in
wit h a 1:48; he was th e o nly perso n to d rop less than two . Cayer
lost 2 1/2 minutes in that section,
bu t his to tal by then was a seven,
putting him well behind Hines.
Seve r al o the r to p rid ers
matched the seven score or came
clos e, includ ing champions hip
hopeful Tom Norton, who lost a
point at the first Check, irnmediately putting him off the lead ers' pa ce. He mad e it up by
zeroing check 10, while Cayer
posted a one, but he couldn't
scrub off ano ther point. try as
he might. The o ther sevenpoin t sco re was posted by
Bob White, who had a better rid e in the a fte rnoo n.
almost matching Hines' score for score
exce pt for a single point at check nin e.
Norto n had the second-best score at the
finish chec k, a 2:09, while Whi te went
2:11.
A sing le eig ht -poi nt ca rd was good
enough to win the High Point A awa rd
for Hans Neff, riding a new KTM Jackpiner. Neff had a blazing score of 1:04 at
check five - a full 46 seco nds fas ter than
Hines - but Ne ff was a lillie careless at
the res t of the checks. High Point A isn' t
bad, though . Bill Riord an scored the best
B-class sco re, with 13 po ints down. He
matched scores with B Four-Stroke rider
Bryan Liebe nt hal, who missed the top B
position by a han d ful of seco nds. The C
High Point was tak en by William Puffer,
who had just joined NETRA that morning . Bill scored a 15 over the abbreviated
