([!ID~. VOICES America's weekly motorcycle newspaper LETTE S TO R T EEDITOR H Vol ume XXXIV Sharon Clayton. Presid ent Michael Klinger, Publisht7 More on Shultz Don 't lose that number I wa nt to com pliment Eric Johnson on the profile h e p ro vid ed o n Darrell Shultz (Iss u e #43, Oc tob er 29). I wa s r igh t i n th e mi d dl e o f 'Am e r ica n mo tocros s during th e ea r ly 'SOS a nd I can a tt es t that "S hu" was o ne o f the mos t colo rfu l figures to ever g ra ce the spo rt . Shultz wou ld alwa ys state wh at was o n h is mi nd , and .g ive you the fa cts. When Honda was buil d ing up its A and B tea ms in the early '80s, few associated w ith the team wou ld d isclose info rm ation - such as what kind of 'm oney was a t stake fo r a fa ctory Ho nd a rid er. I rem ember sitting with Shultz in the pits a t Pontiac, d oin g an interview for Cycle News. Darrell flat ou t told me that win ni ng th e su pe rcross titl e was wo rth a $100,000 bonus from Honda. That wa s big news in 1982, and we printed it... it wa s probably my biggest scoop of the yea r. A few more th ings abo ut Shultz: He wa s a lways at hi s bes t in a re n tal car when Larry Wosick was inclu ded (w hen those two teamed up , it was best to lock t h e doors a n d bar th e w ind ows ); Schultz' s co m me n ts about Joh nn y O'Mara were tru e - he had a wonderful tou ch for starling trouble bu t never get tin g caug ht (l kno w, beca use I've been o n th e re cei v in g e nd of a lecture - for so me thing that Johnny had done); and D arrell w a s t h e co n summate r a cing hero . I'll never forget his 500cc wi n a t Road Atlant a (he won the race, pulled a wheelie and got the girl - all see min gly at the sa me mornentl): Darrell' s injuries w ere so se ve re tha t Chris Hain es had to help ca rry hi m Ihrou g h th e airport to make the fi al races of th e '82 seri es. n I also remember tha t a film wa s d one o n Sh u ltz's cha m p ions h i p qu es t. I b el ieve it w a s ca lled "Agains t All O d ds." It was shot by Pete r Sta rr a nd narra ted by Larry Huffma n. If it's still a va ila b le , i t's a n e pic p iece o n how Shu ltz fou ght to overcome his kn ee an d lung inju ries to win. Tom Mueller Sportrnanage rts ms n.co m In response to Kit Pal mer' s co m ments on the AMA numbers (Issue #43, Oc tober 29 ), it seems add in g Natio nal Moto cr os s and Supe rc ross po int s to geth er 10 formul al e a combined Na ti onal number is prett y basic. Kit me nt ion ed that AMA Dirt Tra ck ha s p e r ma ne nt nu m bers, so mo tocross / supercross racers sho uld d o the same. I don 't expect the fan. wh o watch choppers goi ng arou nd a horse tra ck ma kin g left-hand tu rns for 25 laps to rem ember ne w nu mbe r s eve ry ye a r. An y r eal motocross fan will kn ow the top riders' nu mbers after the first hea t races of the first supe rcros s of the yea r. Giv e mot ocr oss / supercr oss fans some cred it. I'd be will ing to bet we can rem ember thei r nu mber s eve n thuu g h su percross involves left- alld righ t-hand rums. No offen se, Kit. Jerry Je tto n Di amond Bar, CA New England needs I don't understand why the AMA a nd the promote rs continue to forge t abou t New Eng land . We haven ' t had a su percross race her e since Giants Stad iu m in 1991. I don ' t kno w the politics involved with ge tting one up here, but I do kn ow that we need o ne. I ge t extre mely tired of dri ving to Charlotte, o rth Carolina, or Pontiac, Michigan , (both of which are more th an 11 hours a way) to see Mr. Hen ry kick ass (on tha t big four-stroke). I wa nt to kn o w w hen a n d wh e re th e next New England Supercross will be held . I think we d eserve it after it was so viciously taken away from us. Chris Merrill Seymour, cr Two legs? I hope so meone at th e AMA read s this let ter. M at M la d in a nd Mi gu el DuHame l lost o u t o n th e AMA tit le beca u se th e y were in co ns is tent. Yet, bot h men won fo llr races. I can' t help but wonder w ho would hav e w on the titl e had there been a no ther ra ce added on . Make that 11 more races ad ded on . I am one of the fans of AMA Supe rbike racing who woul d like to see a tw o-r ace format per eve nt and wou ld pa y for it if necessary . I realize that man y people don 't wa nt to pay any more tha n the y a lready are and wo uld hate to see the spo rt d ie due to a rise in costs. H owever, th is series s tresses co nsistency, thou gh it o nly has 10 or so races . Yes, I realize that crashes, nonfinish es a nd nons tart s are part of racin g, but I hate to see a spectacular rider blow the series beca use he had o ne bad d ay. 1 recall th e 1996 se ries when D u H a m el DN Fed an d go t no po in ts wh ile C h a nd le r h a d a b ig D N F a nd received valu able poi nts . With the tworace format, the AMA could say : "Look, people, yo u w ill ha ve 22 races and th e points sy s tem will remai n the same. If you ca n' t ge t th e ti tle in 22 ra ces, yo u don 't deserv e to be champ." T he Eng lis h u se a two -race format (tho ug h 1 th ink thi s is due to a lack of race tracks) a nd the Wo rld Superbike guys d o it - and it loo ks like it work s. And both series look like they still draw cro wds . I have two o ther people in my ho use w ho ride bikes and reall y enjo y w atchi ng a nd at te n d i ng Supe rbike Nationals. All three of us would like see a two-race forma t. Kevin Mulh all Kmulh al@wpo.it.Iuc.edu Letters to th e editor shoul d b e sen t to Voices, Cycle News, P.O .
