Th e ' fir st ride stiU secured Zander his third secend-place finish this year. Greg Williams utilized a lot of body la n guage to neg o tiate h is first ju m p. Looking to settle into a groove, Williams opened the throttle as he app roached the third and fo u r th jump. Gelling pushed ou t to the far left , he kept the stre tc h ed fo ur-c ylind er w ound up . Quickly re gaining hi s li ne, Will iams roared over the top as he wheelied away from the ligh ts to record a time of 8.686. To win the Na tional Championship, Will iam s needed to finish 10 po sitions ahead of Jam es Large, or at leas t nine positions ahead to tie. Williams' second climb loo ked fast. He wrung the fourcylinder for aU it wa s wo rth over the last ju m p . Bla sting th roug h the ligh ts, Williams clocked a faster 7.811 - not fast enough to win, but good enough to take third place. Coming o ff th e se cond ju m p , Petty couldn 't hold on as the bike shot out from under him, and he took a distance of 190 fee t for his first ride . Round two proved more fruitful as he pushed the Gerencer-built Harley-Da vidson to its limit . Pulling a good ho leshot, Pett y skipped through the course, making the climb u p the stai rcase look easy. He powered over the top to clock a 7.564, enough to set fast time of the d ay and earn his second National win. Large placed sixth for the day. The "Jammer" put together two solid climbs, clocking an 8.048 for his first ride and an 8.380 for his second. He only needed to fin ish within seven positions of Williams, and with a sixth-position finish for himself and a thi rd for Williams, rookie Large claimed his first National Championship, with 126 p oints to Williams' 120.
