show-jumping: Bradshaw, who was waiting in his camper, was sadly missed. McGrath performed his classic nac-nac and also the Superman jump, and it was one of the highlights for the British crowd that has for so long been robbed of this type of show. A round 11 p .m ., the ri d ers m ade their wa y to the start line, with the pa cked arena coming alive w ith horns blaring. As the start blocks came down, Bradsha w bolted off th e li n e ahead o f McG ra th and H errin g . Back in six th place was Ward, who was looking for a way p ast on the narrow track. "Man, I got a bad sta rt! I coul d see Damon and Jerem y up front , and I just pinned it , got b y all but th e two up fron t, and I knew I had to ge t going," sa id Ward, wh o was already into third place. . McGrath looked likely to pass Bradshaw on lap one, but then made a huge m istake w h ich nea rl y caused him to crash. "I don't know what happened, b ut th e back end nearly passed the front," said McGrath. McGrath's error gave Bradshaw a slight lead and Wa rd was g iving the Yamaha-mounted McGrath some serious hea t, while Herring was holding out in fourth place . "I just want to be best Brit," said Herring before the race. "I won't beat those (American) guys." Still, Bradshaw led; then came his moment of discomfort. "I made a mistake; I didn't feel good on the bike. Then McGrath got by," Bradshaw said. McGrath made a small gap between him and the other two Americans and, at this point, Ward passed Bradshaw. "Once I got in to second, I knew I could catch McGrath; I felt so good on the bike." Ward, in only three laps, was on to the lead er and looking for ways past. McGrath loo ked tired . The man y ju mps and slower rid ers comb ined to give the supercross legend sev ere arm pump. "I had it as soo n as I passed for the lead . It just got worse on every lap ." Th e crowd was now calling on its hero, McGrath, to pull out a magic trick. but it wo uld no t come. With one lap r em ain in g , Ward charged up the whooped-out back straight and set up McGrath for a pass. McGrath, thinking Ward would follow him into a tight right hander, slowed on the point of the tum. Wa rd, keeping his throttle wide op en, went wide and hit the outside berm with perfection. blasting alongside McGrath. " I thought he would go low; then I got caught in a rut and all I could see was his bike coming by," McGrath said. It looked at one point as though McGrath might block the faster Ward, but in a typical show of professionalism, McGrath laid low and ga ve his lead away. " I h ad a really goo d li neu p that whooped out straight. I knew I would get by Jeremy there: Ward said. Third p lace wen t to Bradshaw, w ho looked totally d isgusted wi th himself for his erro r-ridd led race. " I got a great start. I should 've won, but that's the wa y it goes," Bradshaw said . "As soon as I'm home, the hunting season starts for me, so tha t' s some thing to look forward to." 0: Shellield Arena Shellield, England Resuhs:OClober 4,1997 fiNA L: 1. Larry Ward (Ha n); 2.
