N ASCA R n ews d e p t: Former World Champion Kevin Sch w antz finished 29th in his Busch Series Grand National debut o n October 4 in th e All Pro Bu m p e r to Bumper 300 a t Charlotte Mo tor Speedway in Cha rlotte, North Carolina, and will continue to drive the Ryder Driving Recruiting Chevrolet for the remainder of the year and in 1998. Team owner Da vid Ridling announced that "effectivel y im med ia te ly, Kevin 5chwantz will replace Kevin Lepage" as the driver of the team's NASCAR Busch Seri es number 88 entry. Sehwantz had qualified ninth for the Charlotte race, drivi ng th e Bo xb erger Inc. Chevrolet. Sehwantz managed to keep the car in the top 10 for several laps early in the race. When the seco nd of seven caution flags came ou t on the 69th lap, Sehwa ntz pitted for tires and fuel. After retu rnin g to th e ra ce in 27th, his march back to the front was stopped in a tum-tw o altercation (wi th Lynd on Amick) that damaged his car. Qu ick repairs kept him on the lead lap, but the car had develop ed some bad ha ndling cha racter istics. Jus t two lap s after the resta rt for the sixth caution period, Sehwantz had to pit to change a cu t right front tire. He ended up 29th, five laps behind wi nner Jimm y Spencer. For the 19th consecu tive year, road racing returns for an October date at Dayto na International Speedway when the Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Cha mpions a nd NASB Formula USA Series hits the famed speed way Oc tober 26-November 2. Th is yea r's Fall Cycle Scene gets under way with the first allvintage day in the event's his tory w ith the Team USA vs. Team UK match-race series. CCS, F-USA, EBC Sportbikes and Harley-Davidson TwinSports will headline the rest of the racing at Daytona. Team Obsol ete has ann ounced the teams that will make up its T rans-A tl a ntic M atch Race at Dayt ona on Oct ober 26. Team USA will feature Dave Roper as its captain and riders Calvin Rayborn III, Todd Henning, Don Vesco and Richard Moore. Richard Haas and John Long ,,~11 serve as alternates. The British team will fea tu re John Cooper as its cap tain and riders Mike H os e, Stuart Jones, Dave Pither, Colin Breeze, Chris McGahan and Larry Swann. The kickoff night will be held on Thursday, No vember 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. and will featu re appearances by NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle racers such as John Myers, A ngelle Seeli ng, Jo hn Smith, Hector A ra na, Steve Jo h nson , Gary To ngle t, Red ell Har ris, Ge no Seal and other top stars.
