By Bret Eckert SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 26 Jo n Keller used impressive back-to..ba ck mota win s to score th e o ve ra ll vict o ry in the 250("(' Beginn er class at round tw o of the Honda Fall Stori s promoted by KH Racing . Keller, rid ing a e spa r klin g new '98 Yamaha out of Capitol Ycma ha , is now in fir s t pl a ce in th e Ca r mi chael Honda / Hond a of Sacramento-sponsored series wit h two rounds remaining. Keller pulled the holesh ot in th e first moto a nd held it th roug h the critica l first co u p le of turns, a nd quickly set a torrid pa ce that on ly the fast es t riders could match . Da n Wyrick, riding for Cycle Wes t, wa s one of those who matched Keller's speed, a nd he began p ressuring him for the lead . Bret Maddock, Brian Cemius and Brian Young tra iled in pursuit of the lead ers. No one could make a pass stick until lap th ree , wh en Ccmius pushed his Su zuki arou nd Maddock to ta ke ove r third. Wyr ick ba ttled Keller fur three la ps and, with tw o turns remai nin g in lap four, he made his pla y for the lead in the w hoo ps . on ly to cra sh at the end o f the whoop section. At the checkers, it wa s Keller in front, wi th Cerrd us second , Maddock holding o n to third, Young in fourth an d James Brooks coming across in fifth . Moto two prod uced a new le ad e r as the Kawasaki of Maddock emerged up front, with Keller no t fa r behind . Th ere were some ot he r new faces nea r the front of the field this time as M a rk Ma rita o a nd Guy Lowe ga ted well and were in the to p five . Maddock looked in con tro l wi th the lead as the first la p wa s completed, bu t Keller was not far back in second, with Cernius near the fro nt again in third . Keller di d n' t wait lo ng to mak e his move on Mad doc k, and on lap two he o vertoo k him for the lea d, while Ccrnius a nd Marilee co m ple ted th e top four positions. Ei th e r everybody wa s rid ing tire d or rea lly strong, beca use no o ther changes took place in the mo te . Whe n the checkered flag flew , Keller had the win, wi th Mad dock coming across with a ootid seco nd , Cycle Pro's Yo un g third ,_Brooks fou rt h a nd Clint Hand in fifth . There wa s no doubt as to who wo n the overall as Keller cla imed it wi th his 1·1, w hile Mad dock's 3-2 finishes ea rned him a respectable !OeC"" end for the nig ht. Stanley's the man at Bellingham Dirt Track By Clay Li ght BELUNGHAM, W SEPT. 20 A, Na tio na l numbe r 60,- Dan Sta nley , too k advantage of a br eak in the Gr and Nationa l Series to return hom e to his old sto m ping ground~, the ha lf mile ova l at Hannegan Speedway , an d ca~ tured a win in the Expe rt mai n event a t ro und nin e of the Nor thwes t Dealers' Cha mpionshi p Series. Stanley was indeed the man to bea t, as the loc a l r ider took a d o m in a tinJi; w in in h is hea t race in front of a near-eapad ty -crowd on a chilly night to dose ou t th~ AM A District 27 outdoor seas o n a fter hi s wi n in the 20-la p m ain event. Stanley, thou gh , suff~red. a rare loss in a nothe r "Light ning" Lany Denning raced his way to six impre ss ive class wins in ro u nd seven of the G rea t Lake s Road Racing Association Seri~s, held a t Gingerman Raceway. Denni ng too k wins bike, 600cc Suptt rsport, in the GTU , 600cc Supt:!r 750cc Supersport, 600cc GP a nd the Unlimited GP classes. The ra cing was good, consi dering there was an o il spill in tum three tha t required the use .of a permanent yellow flag (no passing goi ng on the re), and pa ssing wa s at a premium in tum to, since ther e wa s a ligh ter oil spill there, too . Th e only glitch in these two days of racing for Denning wa s Kevin Graham, who is C Url.ent· ly fifth in the Toyota Canadian Nationill Super· bike Ser ies. Graham had a special glo w about him as he stu ng the res t of the field o n his blacka nd-ye llow, beelike ZX7. O n Sa tu rday, th is eight-yea r ve teran of racing took the chec kered f1<1g in the Expe rt ero race. '1 enjoy racin g wi th the G LRRA, beca use they ru n some of th e best tracks in the natio n," Gra ham said . 'They have an exce llen t or gan i7.ation, p lus I gl't good testing time. " Denning was sweeping th e tu rn s wide o~ n on his Kawasaki, but was sti ll unab le to catch G ra ha m . O n the la st lap , the figh t fo r sec o nd p lace proved to be fatal for Denning 's bike as it lost power to o ne cy linder . Jeff Va s w as close behind an d too k second pla ce, while Denning hung in the re for thi rd . In the 125/ 250cc Gra nd Prix, Do n Pitch e r fla w les sly defea ted Vos in w ha t wa s only his second time raci ng his 250ec G rand Prix bike. Th e Ama teu r racers p rovided everyone with so me spectacular ra cing as well. Hanshaw was able to hold off Stacy Young in nll but one race, the Unl imited: Grand Prix, wh ere Hanshaw plact!d second . Staq, wh o had just purchased Kevi n Gra ham 's spare bike ea rlier in the wt.'t!"kend, was able to figu re out how to pace his tires . This made- Hanshaw seco nd-best. bu t close at hand nea r the end, w hile Joe Gill and Da rby BraWling finis hed third and fourth, respectively. The excitement didn ' t stop there, as Eric Konigsbe rg began his ra ce in hut pit la ne due to the necessity of repl a cing a clutch that had go ne on hi m in an ea rlier race. Being a litt le la te for the .start made him a litt le la te at the finish, but he still picked off numerous rid ers an d made up plen ty of time to secure an unbelieva ble flfth p1d~.
