H in es, however, didn ' t ha ve enough time to make up a two-minute bu m at check fou r, which ul ti ma tely cos t him the win . The King Phi lip Tra il Riders had a grea t d ay for th eir even t, wit h su n ny skies and d ry , dry wea ther - so d ry that the cou rse wa s dusty and slippery ove r its enti re len gth, and virtually no standing water or mud ha mpered th e riders' fo rwa rd pro gre s s . T he co u r se w as advertised as being run on " ew Eng land's fines t former cow pastures" - bu t that wa s well back in th e 18005. Check tw o would have been the checko ut of that section, so check three wa s a chec k- in to the seco nd sec tio n, and almos t everyo ne zeroed it with ou t incident . Within th e seco nd sec tion, the real poi nts-ta king too k' place. In a long secti on th at sw itched ba ck an d fo rt h bet ween 18 and 24 mph, Cayer held it o n but h eld b a ck en o ug h to h it t he check-out nine seconds in to his min ut e, scori ng a zero a nd 21 em ergenc y seco n d s . Hin e s , o n the o the r hand, whacked the fourth check two minutes ea rly, bagging seven points and all bu t ruining his d ay. Definit ely ru inin g his d ay was Tomm y Norton, the othe r popu lar contender for the o ve ra ll. o rto n hit th e check-ou t a fu ll three minutes early , card ing 12 points all at once and guara nteeing a very low placement in the class for the d ay. One other competitiv e score w a s set by T ri-State Trail Rid e r s' Je r r y Ma d ore , w ho h it the ch eck- o u t a t 0:55, putting him se lf in positio n to be Cayer 's main oppositio n for the day. Mad o re led a pack of riders who each dropped a si ngle point a nd ch a n ge, amo ng them Facto ry Connection's Rick Clax ton (1:43), Heavy A rider Bill Sironen (1:22), an d Veteran A rid er Sam Fischer (1:43). Following check four was a free-territory ride to the gas stop , with a leisurely layover at the site of the old Wre ntha m Two- DayQu a h fie r. Check five was int en d ed to be the check-in to th e las t tw o sections (com prising the whole second half of the enduro ), but the check was placed in viola tion of AMA rules: It was closer than three mil es past a gas stop - it was abo ut a mile past - and for those on their toes , it was a great advantage. Hines, for example, riding according to AMA rul es, hit th e check eas ily three m inu tes ea rly, and kn ew ri gh t away that it had to be thr own ou t. Th is gave h im a three-mi n u te advanta ge goi ng in to what wou ld pro ve ' to be 23 mil es of punis hing , rocky terrai n, with two checks ba ck to back. He used his ad vantag e to the hilt, scoring a tw o at the first check (check six) and a five a t the secon d, but it still w as onl y enoug h to tie him with Ca yer, who went 6-8 in th e sectio ns, totaling 14 po int s for the day. Cayer took the ov erall on tie-breaker second s (taken fro m the sa me check th at Hines burned ). Hines and Cay er took co m mand in the last tw o sections, besti ng eve ry othe r rider. No rto n and Cla xton ca me close, scoring 7-9 an d 7-11, respectively - very good scores, but no t nearly enough to stop the other two . Veteran A rider Ken Robbins and Bant am A rid er Pete Ta nner both scored a seven at the first chec k in the second half, but we nt 13 and 15 r espective ly in the seco nd and fina l check. At the finis h, it was Jaso n Cayer taking the overall by a br oad sw eep of seconds o ve r Hines, both with 14 points showing. Bill Siro nen checked in with a grea t score of 22, good eno ugh for the High Point A award . Raffi Peterson of Kevin Hi nes ' CRE team wo n the High Point B award wi th a 28, which was an exce llent score, but if he w ou ld have avoid ed burning check three by two min utes, he w ould ha ve killed th em with a 21-20, wh ich would have bes ted the Hig h Point A sco re . Paul Silansky roue his Kawasa ki in to a 48-po int finish, taki ng the High Point C trophy with plenty of breathing room. Heid i Landon scored anothe r win i n the Women ' s class, finish ing the whole course with an 86-point sco re. Heidi had co mpeti tion from Dawn Silvia this time, who usuall y contes ts the hare scrambles series . Dawn also finished the cou rse, with a score of 106.
