PIRU, CA, SEPT. 21
ul ti -time na ti ona l m inicycl e
champ Bobby Bonds made the
l.oi~i\lII.move to th e mo to rcy cle d ivision and came away th e wi nner of the
Schoolboy class during round three of
the CMC Sunsta r Spr ockets Trans-Cal
Se ries h eld a t Cra ig Lynch ' s Lemon
Grow Cycle Park.
Bon d s, who a t 13 may see m yo u ng
for th e 12Sec class, s ho w ed no respect
for his elders as he pushed his way to
the front of the Schoo lboy d ivision and
sco red a m em orable first-ever 125ccclass win.
" I just got too b ig fo r m in icycles,"
Bonds ex p la i ned . " My d ad is re al
happy, too, since I am not bending up
my bikes anymo re."·
Bonds may be young, but he' s ve ry
big in experience, stature and riding talent, and he sou nd ly took comma nd of
both m otos to s h oo t d o wn a n d pa ss
heavy favori te Chris Gosselaar .
" I fe ll in th e secon d rno to," sai d a
deject ed Gosselaar. "They wa tered this
turn and I slid out. Even worse is that I
was in the lead."
Bonds went o n to a hands-down runaway in th at second mo to and scored
the win wi th roo m to spare over Gosselaar, wh o put fo rth a lat e- ra ce cha rge
that brou ght him all the way to second
pl ace in front of "Wi ld Thing" Emilt
Kling , Chris Barrett and Brad Terry .
An other first -lime winner was Matt
Ca rpen te r, wh o se co ns is te n t rid ing
earned him the 125cc Novice-class victory. Ca rpenter, w ho sta rted outside th e
top five in the first moto, made a stro ng
charge through the pack to earn the ru nner~up spot behind firs t-mote win ner
Kurt Longo n on his R&R Spo rts-backed
Hon da.
"I just concentra ted on passing guys
every la p," Carpenter sai d . "I was able
to ge t a ro u nd Ch ris Barrelt w he R he
blew a tu rn in the back section."
Dstar Sprockets Trans-Cal Series, Round 3
What abou t series points leader and
class favorite Scott Mumford?
"I wa s a victim," claimed Mumford .
"After 1 got a bad start, the whole situalion went from bad to worse."
Mumford a nd Brad Terry w e re
in volved in a co n tact collision a t the
base of the ho rsesh oe turn.
" His fron t lire was stuck between my
rear wh eel and back fender," Mumford
said . "A fte r th at, I was 15 seconds
behind the last -place rider."
M u m fo rd ra ced a fte r th e fie ld at
w a r p s peed, b ut th e be st he co u ld
must er at th e finis h was se ve nt h, be h ind

Kurt Lon g.
The seco nd moto sa w Mumford gate

lea d. Mumfo rd m o tored away for an
uncont ested victory , whil e both Carpenter and Eide we nt a t it for the second
spot for the rem aind er of the race. Carpent er slowed the pace la te in the race
and settled int o third .
"Jaso n of T.R.E. told me I had it wo n,
so I took it easy to the finish," Carpenter
sa id .
.
When the dust settled , Carpenter had
posted his first-ever Novice-class victory
wit h a 2-3 finish over Long's 7-1, Mumford's 7-1, Greg Chimits' 4-1 and Cirocco's 5-5.
And wh ile the ama teu r ran ks we re
full of surp rises, the 125cc Pro class had
its share as well.
Honda of Tro y-backed Ca sey Lytl e
and rookie Pro Brett Racine set the pace
in th e firs t 125cc Pro race and flat ou t
ran away from the field ,
"When you move up to the Pro ranks,
it's ha rder to make passes," Racine said,
"because when you pass a Pro, you're
taki ng his money - and no one wants to
have their mon ey taken awa y,"
Racin e' s runner·up fi nis h w as th e
first surp rise of the 12Scc Pro d ass, after
he finished behind Lytle and in front of
Rusty Holland, Don ovan Mitchell and
"Movie Sta r" Mike Metzger .
T he second moto saw Lytle take a
"su rp rise" off-t rack excu rsion a fter he
missed a turn and flew bo dily off the
side of the mountain. The next surprise
came when a group of Pros ail ran into
one another and recorded DNFs; these
riders incl uded Racine (whose bike su ffe red a broken p ipe ), [i r i Dostal a nd
Andy Anaya.
In the end, Holland pos ted the moto
and ove ra ll victory, topping Lyt le, wh o
regrouped for second overall in front of
'Mitchell.
Erik Kehoe sho wed no mercy to th e
250cc Pro class and simply ou tmuscled,

Payne po s ted a perfect 1-1 finish in
th e 125cc Intermediate class, rid ing
a way with b ig leads i n bo th m ot o s
abo a rd his T.O . Kawasaki, while Coostantino u struggled to seventh overall.
"I a m a bi t too hea vy (fo r) a 125,"
Constanlinou said . "I have a ha rd time
getting any kind of a start."
Payne finished ahead of former mini

to improve an d was repo r ted to have
been ra ci n g o ne of Steve Lamson' s
wo rks bikes tod ay, finishing in front of
th e N-Stvle-backed Kawasaki of Chris
Coo ley, An d reu Labrad or and rising talent Bobby Bonds.
Constanlinou got his reven ge in the
more powerfu l 250cc In termedi ate divis io n, w here he posted a d o uble-mo te

Constantinou had a cakewa lk in the
firs t mot o a fte r Payne sta rte d ou tsi de

The second mo to saw Payn e pull out
all th e st ops and keep th e pressu re o n
Co nstantinou rig ht up to the checkered
flag, but he missed the wi n by less than
a wheel len g th . Jas on Wood a nd Ron
Gi lbe rt d iced for thi rd for m os t of the
day, wi th Gilbert getting the nod , wh ile
Ch ris Ne itzel turned heads with a solid
fifth after lead ing both Payne and Co nsta nlino u for a few laps during the second moto.
Jonathan Shim p was king of the mini
ra nks wit h a fou r -mot e sweep of the
BOcc (14-16) and Superm ini di vis ions.
Shimp sta rted behind ho leshot artist
Brian Hulsey in bo th motos,

.
Shim p wasted little time and passed
Hulsey ea rly in both mot os and pulled
away for a convincing set of moto victories.
.
Shi m p re tu r ne d to d o battle with
Team Suzuki's Sha ne Bess in the Supermi ni d ivision, but once again th e results
we re all too familiar, wi th Shimp again
