Laun ching ove r the jum ps, he sa t down with the th rottl e read y as he wrung the triple for all it was worth. Howling over the top wi th a fast finish , the d igita l d isplay showed a third- place ride of 3.2892. Alwa ys in 11th place, just ou tside of the mo ney, Shreiner gleefully celebra ted his top- three fin ish. Pulling a good holeshot, Petty doubled the jumps with a crus~up in the air. Land ing lon g over the kicker, Petty cas ed the nitr o -fed Harley - ha rd . The teeth-jarring land ing w as dealt with by feeding the injec ted machine all it cou ld drink as Petty blas ted up the right side of the cou rse. He made the light jus t before going o ut of bounds. Exiting on the righ t side of the hil t Pett y bail ed off as the s tre tched mach ine bounced d own the back sid e o f the hill. The showy rid e produced a fast 3.2532-seco nd tim e. Less s howy in the seco nd round, Petty blasted over the hill for the las t time a s he finis he d up the field of 16 riders with a slower tim e. The nativ e Hoosier se ttled for a seco nd -place finish , relyin g on his earlie r, sho wier ride to secu re his finish pustion. "It was a little high," Petty sai d of his first ride . "I finally go t it back down on the gro u nd and I hit the th rottle aga in. It snapped m e bac k o nto the b ack - I couldn't hardly hold onto it. I got to the timers and climbed off of it.
