" I just got too b ig fo r m in icycles," Bonds ex p la i ned . " My d ad is re al happy, too, since I am not bending up my bikes anymo re."· Bonds may be young, but he' s ve ry big in experience, stature and riding talent, and he sou nd ly took comma nd of both m otos to s h oo t d o wn a n d pa ss heavy favori te Chris Gosselaar . " I fe ll in th e secon d rno to," sai d a deject ed Gosselaar. "They wa tered this turn and I slid out. Even worse is that I was in the lead." Bonds went o n to a hands-down runaway in th at second mo to and scored the win wi th roo m to spare over Gosselaar, wh o put fo rth a lat e- ra ce cha rge that brou ght him all the way to second pl ace in front of "Wi ld Thing" Emilt Kling , Chris Barrett and Brad Terry . An other first -lime winner was Matt Ca rpen te r, wh o se co ns is te n t rid ing earned him the 125cc Novice-class victory. Ca rpenter, w ho sta rted outside th e top five in the first moto, made a stro ng charge through the pack to earn the ru nner~up spot behind firs t-mote win ner Kurt Longo n on his R&R Spo rts-backed Hon da. "I just concentra ted on passing guys every la p," Carpenter sai d . "I was able to ge t a ro u nd Ch ris Barrelt w he R he blew a tu rn in the back section." Dstar Sprockets Trans-Cal Series, Round 3 What abou t series points leader and class favorite Scott Mumford? "I wa s a victim," claimed Mumford . When the dust settled , Carpenter had posted his first-ever Novice-class victory wit h a 2-3 finish over Long's 7-1, Mumford's 7-1, Greg Chimits' 4-1 and Cirocco's 5-5. And wh ile the ama teu r ran ks we re full of surp rises, the 125cc Pro class had its share as well. Honda of Tro y-backed Ca sey Lytl e and rookie Pro Brett Racine set the pace in th e firs t 125cc Pro race and flat ou t ran away from the field , "When you move up to the Pro ranks, it's ha rder to make passes," Racine said, "because when you pass a Pro, you're taki ng his money - and no one wants to have their mon ey taken awa y," Racin e' s runner·up fi nis h w as th e first surp rise of the 12Scc Pro d ass, after he finished behind Lytle and in front of Rusty Holland, Don ovan Mitchell and "Movie Sta r" Mike Metzger . T he second moto saw Lytle take a "su rp rise" off-t rack excu rsion a fter he missed a turn and flew bo dily off the side of the mountain. The next surprise came when a group of Pros ail ran into one another and recorded DNFs; these riders incl uded Racine (whose bike su ffe red a broken p ipe ), [i r i Dostal a nd Andy Anaya. In the end, Holland pos ted the moto and ove ra ll victory, topping Lyt le, wh o regrouped for second overall in front of 'Mitchell.
