Katie Ca mpbell rode a Can -Am 125 to the moto-o ne win among the Intermedia tes, but had to settle for second overall when she couldn't catch the overall win ner, Honda rid e r Chris ty lig hthou se, and CZ pilot Heather Larson the sec ond time o ut. In the Novice class, Hu saberg rider Sand ra Ross's 2-1 bested the 1-3 of Honda pilot Ellen Voermans. Lightweight category saw Ken Burnin gha m and his Co llon lose on ly half as man y mar ks a s Triu mph rid er Brid Caveney amo ng the Experts. Tied at 10 poi nts with Greeves pilot Dennis Brown , BSA rider Evan Wilcox got the Intermedia te win on the basis of more clean sections . Greeves rider Tom Boyd wo n the tie breaker for third over Trium ph pilot Rob Stickler, both with 17 po ints . BSA rid er Randolph St o ike lost ju st two marks to win the Novice division . Modem Classic Novi ce was the da y's bigg est class with nearly 50 entries, and Yamaha-mounted Jim Reardon was one of only two riders to zero the trial. (The other was Ton y Asnicar in the Beginner cla ss .) Second , with a score jus t o ne point be hind, wa s Kawasaki-mounted Gary Neff. Among the 34 Intermediates, David Boyd stun a nd h is Yamaha clawe d their wa y to the top, losing 18 marks in the proces s. Second went to Honda ride r James Smit h wit h a 24 for the day. PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSIO N HISTOR IC CUPIB MW CLASSIC CUP ROA D RACE Iron Man w inner Robert Borg provided two races' worth of excitement on a 250 cc CZ motocrosser fi tt e d w ith sticky street tires during Saturday's road race. There w ere a reco rd 258 Vintage. Battl e of the Twins and Sound of Thun de r ent ries on Saturday, and another 28 AHRMA Sou nd of Singles entries ran as part of Sunda y's MRA modem program on the 1.B-mil public-streets circui t. e In Borg's firs t race, 250cc GP, John Richardson was the earl y leader until he fell victim to treacherous turn one at the beginning of the sixth of eigh t laps. Borg was dicin g with Larry Poon s and Geoff McCarthy, both on Ducatis, and had just wo rked into second when Richardson's fall gave him the lea d . Borg h eld off Poons fo r tw o m ore laps to earn his first -ever AHRMA road race win. Two races later, Team Obso lete's Erik Green led 350cc GP from the beginning on a n AJS 7R, but his shad ow was the pesky Borg . Unfo rtu nately, befor e the CZ rider could try his luck at an ot her win - an d he looked like he fully intend ed to - Borg got inadvertently taken ou t SPEED & SPORT MOTOCROSS Premier-class machines aren't usually very numerous, but Stea mboa t had plenty of well-ridden examples in a moto that co m b in ed Prem ier 500c c Expert and Intermed iate (w it h n in e entries ap iece), a long with all Prem ier Lightweight d ivisions (wi th 11 entries total ). In moto one, Dick Mann an d his '59 Mona r k 500 ju m ped to an immediat e lead , leavin g the battle for second to Jeff Smith on Claude McElvain ' s BSA 840, Terry Hyde on a Rickman Triumph, and Robert Poo le on a '63 BSA. Smith and Poole jostled right to the end, with Smith taking the second spot. Jamie Jenn y bested th e Intermediat es in this and moto two aboard his Gold Star, whil e Greevesmou nt ed Lynn Boyer did the sa me in Premier Lightweight Intermediate. The second Premier 500cc moto started as a race be tween Hyde and Poole, with Man n gradually working his way towa rd the d uo . By the last lap, Mann had earned the lead , as Hyde and Poole kept up th eir ba ttle. The n Poole broke a way and closed on Ma nn. Th e BSA rider was right on the rear fende r of the tw o-time Grand N ational Champion, bu t Ma nn ga ve n o o p portunity for a pa ss a nd held on for the ove ra ll w in . Poo le's 3-2 finishes were good for second overall. A step up the motorcycling time-line, and near ly as exciting, were the d ay' s C lassi c 250 and 500cc clash es . In th e open ing 250cc Expert ra ce, Montesa-_ mounted Dave Boydstun finished ahead of AjS pilot Dan Johns after Poole on his BSA ran in to problems on the last lap while ba lliin g with Boyd stun . Jo h ns proved to be th e man to beat in moto tw o, ge lli ng by ea rly lea der Boyds tu n and ope ning a bit of a margin by race's en d as th e Mon tesa a nd BSA riders argued ove r second. Johns ' 2-1 finishes we re be tter than Boyd stun's 1-2 at trophy time. The A-Jay pilot was a double winner, taking Classic 500cc over Husabe rg rider AI Wenzel. On his wa y to a pair of overall wins, Canad ian Maico rider Rick Hudson was mixed up in some close raci ng. In Over 30 Expert, Scott Ross on his Honda held off Hudson for a narrow win , but the second race w as all Huds on's . Two races later, in Sportsman 500cc, Hudson was involved in a pass- and -repass affair with fellow Maico pilot Tony Glassier. Though Glassier wo n the first time out, Hudson made su re he go t to the checkered flag first to earn the overall .
