The For est Se rvice had tr immed the trail miles down just th e week before the eve nt , and Huffe r had to scramble to pu ll it together. They got creative a nd laid out a course loop consisting of 40 mi les, run two times . lI uffer wa s WOTried a bout this format, bu t the riders were more than ha ppy to get another cha nce to nail a line that was missed on th e first time through . The sec ond !< )P wa sn 't a carbon copy of the first. A X special virgin-trail detour was thrown in to rob the A and B riders of a few more points - and rob po int s it d id . NY, AUG. 12 ·13 ,....., ... ai '2 u o 34 Althuugh it ra ined and the track was muddy and slick at tim es at the Amateur Motocross held in co nju nction with tht:' AM A 125/25Oc c Na tiona l at the Broome·.Tioga Spo rts Center - it didn't keep Paul Carpenter from dominating the 125cc Expert clas,s. In th c first mot a, Carpenter, Chuck Mesley, ,md Shane McMillen established their firs t. second and thi rd running positiollj" respectively, l on the fll"St lap a nd. h... d them to the finish . In thc St.'COnd moto, thc thn.-c finished in the sam e ord ~r again, but Mt:':l'lt:'y had to 'pa~s his way to seco nd . Carpenter took the easy win that saw him open up a 12'"St'COnd lead by the fourth lap. In thf' 250 cc /Opf'n Expf"rt class, Rob bie Wood proved he wa s the holes hot maste r by pulli ng the ho leshot in bot h mot os. In the firs t mot o, Bob Eichlin took first plac from Wood on e the opening lap. Th en Mike Spear pa ssed Wood and Eichlin for the lead. Ca rpe nter came up and pas sed Wood and then Eichlin on the sec ond lap , and star ted to cat ch Sp ea r. Ca r penter followed a nd pa ssed Spea r on th e outside to tak e first on the fourth lap and had a six-seco nd lead by the ne xt lap. Carpenter took th e w in ; followed by Spear. Meanwhile, Matthew Bond had w orked in to fourt h pla ce a nd was putting pres'lure on Eichlin. Bond pa ssed Eichlin on the last lap to finish in third. On the first lap of the second moto, Ca rpenter jumped pa st Wood on the roa dway tabl etop and started to pull away. Casey Higgi ns.. jum ped . into seco nd pla ce, followe by Bond, Spea r a nd d Maxwell At the start of the third lap , Carpenter was wa y out front and looked to have his third mo tu uf the day in the bag with a 12~nd lead as Bond pa ssed Spea r to ta ke seco nd . On th e fifth lap, Ca rpenter fell hard into the double jum p tha t followed the roadwa y tabletop and. lost his JX'Ki ~ tion. It appeared that he might not be a ble to contin ue, but be col lected himself be fore los ln g too many posi ti on s. Bond inheri ted firs t, followed by Spea r, and they finished first and secon d overa ll. Thunder, lightning and showers delayed the start of the' Women's clas s, whi ch was run wit h the S5cc (14- 15) di vision . In the firs t mot o, Erin MdJennott took the lead on a slippery track, fol· lowed by lindsa y Cron, Shelly Ott and Renee Tht:':l'ing . Ott fell on lht:' fin.l lap , but battled bad to pa s..
