I can tell the rid er s what I was always tol d w hen I Belgians win, Americans falter at Motocross des Nations T he u.s. entry in the 1997 Motocross des Na tions suffe red a humiliat ing defeat on a mudd y, hard-packed track in Nismes, Belgium, on September 14. The Team USA trio of Jeff Ernig, John Dowd and Steve Lamson had a miserabl e time on the mudd y, one-lined circuit that was the res ult not of bad weather, bu t rath er an extreme case of overwa tering. Belgium, the hos t nation , wo n the event by eig ht points over a surprising Italian entry (23-31), w ho finis hed another three poi nts ahead of Great Britain in third . Team USA, the defending race cha m pion and winner of the last 14 of 16 des Nations titles, finished an uncharacteris tic eighth. The Americans had a miserable time on the Nismes track. which was carved from the rem ains of an old stone quarry, ra ther tha n the usual Belgian track surface of. loamy sand and dirt. The track wa s slick and rocky. Wh en the track crews poured an obscene amount of water on the track both before and after practice, the thin layer of topsoil that did exist became soupy and , eventually, onelined. The track d id not play into an yone team's hands, alt ho ugh it was rumored tha t the track was saturated to help Belgium's Marnicq Bervoets and joel Smets, wh o excel in the mud. Rega rdless, it bad ly affected the Ame ricans . Ho nda 's Lamson crashed in bot h of his outings and was relega ted to 21-15 showings. Yamaha's Dow d was running third in the combined 125/ 25Occ moto when his eng ine began to sp utter and fail, forcing him out of the race altogether. Kawasa ki's Emig was a solid second in the combined 125/ 5OOcc moto but then struggled to 12th on a d rying track in the final race. The star of the event was Germany's Pit Beirer, who guided his 250cc Hon da to a pair of runaway wins in the 125/2SOcc and 250 / 500cc motos. A very surp rising james Dobb of Grea t Britain wa s the highes t-scorin g 12Sec rider via his 11-6 overall scores, which would have been a 3-1 in the 12Sec class under the old scoring sys tem. The SOOcc-class win ner was Belgium 's joel Smet s, wh o went 35. His teammate, Stefan Everts, the pre-ra ce favo rite, finished 2-3 in the 250cc class , and lhe other Belgian , Bervoets, was the thirdfastest 125 wi th 10-10 finish es. was racing: 'Ride it: If the riders don 't like where the curbs are tough. That's where I like them," La wso n joked. " I think the AMA race here next April will be reall y good. [ think the guys who haven' t rode here in a long time will be pleasantly surprised at all the changes." The AMA Superbike Series visits Willow Springs April 24-26, 1998. p .m.
