Th e midrange punch is re a lly noticeable, giving really good roll-on acce ler atio n exiting one of Calder 's tighter turns but th e way th e reduced ine rtia of th e titanium-eq uip ped motor allows it to p ick up engine speed so very quickly once yo u hit the five-figure mark on the tache is genuinely im pressive. The needle jus t scoots around the dial practi cally as fas t as on a two-stroke - then suddenly it's time to tap the race-pattern gearshifter for a higher ra tio. The speedshifter's act ion is s tiffer than on other bikes, but I peefer that because there's no risk of knocking it into a higher gea r o r cutting the ignition inad vertently as you move around on the bike, as other , systems will, a n d the close-ra tio kit gea rbox has well- matched rati os tha t allow yo u to 'short-shi ft w ith out losing momentum. But o ne impression stays w ith you for a long tim e after riding the Suzuki: it 's F-A-S-T! Th e Suzuki sets the standard for the supeebike speed stakes, and as you s tr uggle to hold on to the bars and mold yourself to the kevlar tank in a v a in endeavor to present a wi ndcheating profile, there's an undeniable thrill at how fast yo u 're goin g, which the muted shriek fro m the kit exhaust only fuels . Awesome - gimme more! Fas ter than even a Honda, less peaky than the '95 Yamaha but more powerful than its '96 smoothed-out successor, and with a far wider sp read of power and better acceleration than the '96 Kawasaki - enginewise, the Suzuki is a very impressive package - which leaves only the handling with a qu e stion mark ha nging over it . Calder proved the • Ansett team has completely resolved this, setting a benchmark at which other Su z u ki teams must aim.
