holeshot but chose th e ins ide of turn
o ne. Eri ckson railed th e o utsid e a nd
en tered the wh oops in th e lead, half a
bike length ahead of Dra per. The friendly rivals, who freq uently com pe te head
to head a t Ama teu r nationals, chec ked
o u t ea rly . Th e p ace w as much fast e r
t ha n in m oto o n e , a n d Eri ck son a n d
Draper b u ilt u p a seven-second lead
over the pa ck after just tw o laps. Draper
ma tche d Eric kso n ju mp fo r ju m p an d
turn for tu rn but could make no serious
pass attem pt . Eric kso n rode flawl essly
and , after Draper bobbled , finished first
wit h two seconds to s pa re .to take th e
championship . Dra per's 2-2 gave him
second ov er all , while Ohland's co nsistency paid off as his 3-3 secu red th ird
pla ce honors . Klimek cruised in for
another fourth-place showing and Brayton Ringsdorf's 5-5 rounded ou t the top
five.

receive the first-ever Hot Shoe numberone plates to be worn in '98. The even t

With practice a nd scra tch heats put
to rest , the program beg an on schedule.
McKee and Hayden dominated their
250cc Pro-Am qualifiers . The pair of racers would also w in their 600cc heats,
McKee with a time of 3:48.876 and Ha yden with a 3:49.237. Series points leader
Tim Eades also earned a win with a lime
of 3:51.949, the slowest of the qualifiers.
Pauley would win the fast est
(3:46.865) of the three 600cc Expert qualifiers.

The 250cc Pro-Am fina l was br ought
to the line, with Hayden and McKee get ting the first tw o starting spots. Hayd en
too k the ou tside pole, with McKee at the
inside . Hayd en was too much for th e
field a nd disappeared on the Second
Ch an ce Auto Sales/Hart Racing / TCR
Rotax. Scott Cleve nger held down third
behind McKee. Phil Palmer was fourth,
in fr ont o f jeff La ndrum a nd jeremy
Thompson. One of the best rides of the
evening might have go ne unnoticed, as
Ha yd en a nd McKee outd ista nced th e
fie ld, but Phi l Palmer moved through
th e field on an air-cooled, CR-engined
m ount. McK ee 's second -p la ce finish
consolida ted his hold on th e Hot Sh oe
series pla te . Palmer wound up third
af te r getti ng by Clevenger. Th e third
place w as noteworthy n ot so muc h
because of the aged mount as because of
the Indiana racer's battle with brain can cer. Palm er's spora d ic appearances at
racing events in '97 are due to medical
treatments that have the cancer in remissio n.

process fro m th e outside pole . Bro wn
read the light and was the only one with
a d ean face shield after one lap of the

Rotax. Meanwhile, Sentell wo rked hard
from a less-tha n-desirable start.

By the halfway p oin t, Sentell had
worked his way past Claude Raci n e,
Ni ckens, joe Kopp a nd Coolbeth. Sentell's d rive would carry him past Pauley
for a d ista nt second behind Brown.
Th e Pr o-Am racers took to the slick
surface for the second lim e during their
600cc main . Tim McKee had the outside
pole, but Chris Huss won the race to the
first turn. Hayd en's forceful but smooth
s ty le wo ul d not be d enied . With th e
crossed flags displayed , Hayden had the
event in hand . McKee go t the bette r of
Hu ss fo r the place pos itio n . T he
Gree nvi lle event was not good for series
lead er Tim Eades. The elder Eades gat ed
in the rear of the field and finished seventh. Tim 's younger brother, joe. fared a
bit better with a fif th- p lace run. Hay d en's fi nish es in th e P ro -A m e ve n ts
assured hi m of his Expert s tatu s for the
remainder o f the '97 seaso n.
