The standard Speedway Championship format was utilized in the event, paying three points to win, two for second. one for third an d zero for fourth. In the opening heat of round one, Pat Linn started from the pole and abo started the. winning, while veteran standout jimmy Sisemore was second. Billy Janniro took advantage of Bob Hicks ' mecha nical ills to win the second heat, w hile Hedden got his firs t win of the nigh t in heat three . The fourth and final heat of the first round found Bast on the pole and Koss uth in gate two . Kossuth rolled to a pe rfect start ahea d of Best, who tried. the inside and o utside lines bu t came up short at the checkered flag. In round two, Linn matched his opening rid e w ith a nice win over Vance Felicia . Kossu th abo matched his opening rid e, taking the victory over Kelly Benne tt and the mech anica lly stru ggling Hicks. Bast and Hedden. who finished first and seco nd in the season's points ba ttle, finis hed in the SOIme o rd er on the track, with Bast sligh tly ah ead (or the win. Sisemo re got his first win to close o ut the seco nd round . Hedden con tin ued his stro ng rid ing with a w in ove r Hicks to open the thir d ro un d . Hed den said "thanks" a nd took th e win that he ma y ha ve claimed in an y case . Chad Felicio got his only win of the ni ght when he held o ff Fa ria a n d Robert Curry . In the final go of round fou r, Sise• mo re put Bast another po int off the pace wi th a quick lane-three sta rt. Th e fina l round opened w ith Bast ta king ~ w in. just ahea d of the pesky ]anniro and Curry. Faria sa ved his fines t ride fo r last as he outdis-tanced Bennett, Steve Martynse and Rick Shafer. Hicks rod e a bo rro wed bike to the victory over Chad Felicia ii" the evening's second-to-last rid e, The final hea t of the event could not hav e been planned better. Kossu th and his perfect 12-point score lined up in lane tw o. In lane four, Sisemore sa t in w ith 11 poin ts , a nd He d d en sq ueezed between them in lan e three wi th anoth er 11point tot al. Sise more got the start an d led the pack through the first set of turns and down the back stra ight, whe re a ll three rid ers a ttem pted to occupy a sin gle spot in tu m three, lea ving the outsid e-running Sis emore the "odd man o u t" .. n d o n the ground . McDonald, who came off the a pole, a lso wen t down a n d promoter /referee Dave jo iner brought out the red flag. "I thought it was a bit o f rou gh riding by Louis." SOlid a dejected Sisemore ahcr the ev en t, "but I was on the outside, and I guess tha t's just racing." On th e resta rt, Koss u th made an other brilliant gate and drove smoothly to checkered flag ahead of Hedden and. Sisemore, w ho struggled wi th a dirt -packed dutch. With his third-place finish. Sisemore tallied 12 points and a fourthplace finish overall Hedden'. second-place finish pu t him into a ronaff wi th Bast ror the ronn er- up s p o t. Ba s t d rew the insid e s ta r t in g position in the runoff b ut was out second and could onl y watch as Hedden rod e the groove to second place in the even t. But the title belonged to Koss uth, who is just now feeling at home in Auburn. . "A fan told me I'm a native up here now," Kossuth said. "I appreciate that.
