O n th e fin a l lap, Mc Levy gave it everything he had an d was ab le to close the gap on Levesque. The two riders ca m e to the fina l water crossing only seco n ds apart - Levesq ue ex iti n g th e wate r as McLevy entered. But it was too little too late, as Levesque only had 50 feet to tra ve l before th e fi nish line. McLevy had to be content wi th second place. Timothy held off Clarke to take third overall an d move h im self into thi rd pla ce in the poi nts standi ngs. Clark e finished fourth overa ll for the dav and also took hom e the Expert cl ass overa ll. Rounding ou t the top five wa s former NETRA Champion Scott Phelp s. Ken Valentine continued to " finish in the top 10, tak ing sixth overall and winning the Expert Open class. An o the r r ider p ro vin g to be a top contender after onl y his first yea r ou t of th e Junior class is Brian Lawson . Lawson wo n' the Exp ert 200cc class and finished ahead of sev eral AA rid ers, takin g eighth overa ll. Earlie r in the day, the club ran tw o races, with the Junior event ru nni ng first and then the Novices. Both ra ces ran the sa me course, but for fewer laps make fo r one-hour events. The Junio r class , which ha s been dom ina ted byDrew Carpenter for most of the yea r, had a new wi nner: Dere k Phelps. Phelp s took the ea rly lead a nd si m p ly ra n away. Carpenter was seco nd , wi th Boyd Brow er finishi ng a close third. Sa lly Ha be r broke Hei d i Lo ndon's winning streak by taking the Women's class win, a nd the co m peti tion in the Mini class is still be in g controlled by Robert Rowe. Rowe once again took the win, wit h Bob Langenback taki ng second. In th e Novice e ve nt, it wa s Kevin Kulpa taki ng the class ove ra ll. n to (Above) Overall winner Todd Levesque (4) leads second place fi ni sher Josh McLevy (2) and third-place finish er Pat TI mothy (6) at th e Uni on Hare Scra mb le in Con necticut. It was a perfect weekend for racing. Lots of rain the previous week left th e track nice a nd ta ck y with vi rtu a lly no du st. Aft er th e la st ra ce hel d h ere in June, th e Ra m b le r s redesi gned th e course an d all of the long straightaways w ere re m o ve d in a n e ffo r t to lower speeds. The whooped-out secti ons we re also red o ne and a few new sectio ns we re added . On e such section contained an ominous-l ooking mud hole that actually had a solid- roc k bottom and prov ed to be no problem . Ther e were two offca m ber sectio ns added - o ne full of rocks and the o ther fea tu rin g about an eighth of a m ile of vi rgi n, off-camber 'Single-track. This section gave some No vice rid ers tr ou ble, bu t proved no prob lem for the Amateurs and Expe rts. The final change was out back, where they cut a new , wide trail th rou gh th e woods next to a whooped-out dirt road . The new track was basicall y th e sa me length at 5.7 miles , bu t lap times wer e slowed by a few minutes per la p. Th e main spectato r poin t - the infamous wat er hol e - was still u sed, and all th e ra in meant that it was quite deep. This made for great spectating - es peci ally du rin g the Novice event, as riders flew throu gh the w ater only to d ro w n ou t as w ater came flowin g over their handlebars. Th e Ama teu rs and Experts lined up at abo ut 1:30 p .m . for the Blac kwatersty le sta rt. The o nly two riders o n the front ro w were Manchester Honda ' s McLevy and Pirel li/Tech Tubes /RPM sponsored Levesqu e. Levesq ue grabbed . th e h olesh ot , but went ove r th e berm int o the firs t corner, handing the lead to Mc l.evy . Th e two riders hun g ri ght together fo r th e en tire firs t lap, with Team Gree n's Patrick Timothy close behind . On ce the rid ers crossed th rough th e b arrels and arou nd th e pi t a rea , Levesq ue took the in side lin e and the lead from McLeV\'. McLeV\' staved close for a whi le, bu t e nded up falling ov er twice, th us allo wing Levesque to move ahead. By the end of the secon d la p , Levesq ue had so me 25 seconds in hand ove r McLevy. It took two laps before McLevy go t sight of Levesq ue again, but by th en it was time to pit and once again he was down 25 seco nds. "I could see Todd th rou gh the woods at different sections of the track, but I just couldn' t get close to him," McLevy said late r. The two lead riders had now pu lled away from the res t of the pac k. Timo thy was still in th ird , bu t w as u nd er p ressure from Expert 250cc rid er Wes Cla rke and Expert O pen rider Ken Valenti ne.
