laid out a sizzlin g 5.125-sccond run on
his C R500 to post the first reall y fast
time to beat early in the 500cc class - but
it was beaten, first by Eric Wheelwright
fro m H an over, lIIinois, with a blazin g
5.068-second run o n his H o nd a . Chad ·
Koopsma from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was even quicker on his CR5(X), turning a 5 .067-s~con d time to post a new
fast tim e and take the 500cc-dass lead
into the second round.

Nei nfeldt" from Nekoosa, W iscons in ,
unleashed his 1442cc H arl ey and flew
up the h ill in what was obviously a wry
fast rid e, bu t rotated past the vert ical on
a h igh -flyin g jump o ff the breaker at 180
feet. The H arley flipped backward on
lan ding, nearly pinning Ne infeld t at the
230-foot mark. Duane Walse r from N ew
U1m, Minn esota, riding a 1500cc Harley,
pos ted a fine 5.278-second firs t-round
ti me to find h imse lf in second place
behind , orthrup going in to th e seco nd
round.
Sunday's firs t su b-five-secon d run
was delivered b y Mik e W o od in th e
500cc class. Wood flew hi s CR500 over
th e to p in 4.85 1 secon ds fo r th e class
lead, selling a new fa st ti me. And y
Rygel, fro m D u n kerto n, Iowa, rode a
Yam aha YZ490 in a fine 4.96-sccon d ru n
for second place, and KX500-mounted
