VINTAGE AHRMAlSPEED &SPORT VINTAG IfXSERIES E (Left) Gary Poland (13) and Dan Johns (SST) ataged a classic battle In the Classic 125cc division at the Honda Hills AHRMA NatIonal MlC. House improved one position in moto two to earn second o verall with 3-2 finish es over Nance's 2-4. Nance had his reven ge in Sportsman 250cc, taking the overa ll with 2-1 placings. As Treadway trounced th e twostrokes in the Sportsman 500cc intermediate division, there was again plenty of action in the pack. In the rare lor third behind Bill Patton, Scott McPherson just managed to hold off Mike Scholl at the fin ish. M cPhe rson w as second in m ot o two, ahead of Scholl and Patton, taki ng second overall in the p rocess. McPher son topped Patton for the Over 30 Intermediate win. In Sportsm a n 125cc In te rmediate, James Kostival rode to a comfortable first-mote win behind Expert Mike Boggia . The secon d heat s a w Kostival en gaged in back-and-forth battle wi th Mike Sturdevant until Kosti val tumbled late in the race; he remounted without losing h is position, but too la te in th e race to regain any grou n d. Even wi th the miscue, Kostival's 1-2 finishes were good fo r the overall, ahead of David Keith's 2-3 score. Canadian Rick Hudson was thrilled w ith th e H onda Hills traction and bla zed to 1-1 fini shes in th e Over 30 Expert class. Just as impressive was the By Matt Benson UNNVILLE. OH, AUG, 16 HRMA's Classic classes, 'catering to some of the underappred ate d m achine s of th e late _ 1960s and early '70s, typi cally have fewer entries than most AHRMA classes. Yet, as the Honda Hills round of the AHRMA /Speed & Sp ort Vintage MX Series showed, th ese classes often produce excellent racing. Dan Johns was a factor in the Expert division of all three Classic categories, taking first in the 250cc class, second in 125cc and third in 500cc. He rode a Monark 125 and a pair of AJS Stormers. The day's two larges t classes - Sportsman 500cc and Over 40 Intermedia te went to the same rider. Mike Treadway, who was on a Honda Xl35O. The rolling. serpentine central Ohio 34 track was in p erfect condition for the 190 vintage entries. Even though the day w a s qu ite hot and humid, d ust was only minim al1 ate in th e event, an d traction remained superb. Johns, w ho hails from Quincy, Illi- . nois, ma de his first appearance in Classic 125cc . The battle for the lea d for much of th e race wa s between Ga ry Poland on a Bul taco Sherpa S and Intermediate racer Dustin Gin der on a Rickman Zundap p. When Gin der's engine loaded up, Poland slipped into the lead, followed by Johns. Despite a strong lastla p e ffo rt , Johns finished the moto a close second to Poland. Treadway captured the Over 40 Intermediate and Sportsman SOOcc wins aboa rd the same Honda XL3S0 . Pola nd all race lo ng. with the Bultaco rider aga in taking the win by just half a bike length to score the overall win. Gind er again raced with the Experts lor most of the moto an d took the Intermediate win wi th 1-1 finishes. The Classic 250cc battle pitted Johns agai ns t his frequent riva l, Quebec rider Steve Tucker on a ' 68 BSA 250. As he has don e so many tim es, Tucker stalked John s for most 01 the moto;..t hen passed the AJS rider late in the race to take the win. Although the second moto)ooked as th ou gh it wou ld be a repeat of th e first, as Tu cker narrow ed th e margin betwee n h imself a nd Jo h ns ea ch lap, Johns kep t the lead until the chec kered flag waved, earning th e ove rall with 2-1 finishes. Tucker climbed on his '67 BSA Victor and put together tw o perfect scores in the Classic 500cc class, agai n nipp ing Johns and his AJS 370 at the finish in the opening moto. In the second race, Kim Burrows came ho me ahead of Johns to earn second overall w ith 3-2 finishes. The In te rmediate wi n we n t to St e ve Tucker's son David, on a BSA thumper. In the da y' s, biggest class, Over 40 Inte rmed ia te, Treadway eas ily ou tdistanced the res t of the field. Behind him w as a good rac e for se co n d between second-overall performance logged by Da vid Lindeman of Denver, Co lora do, on a big Yamaha XS650 twin. Lining up with the other twins, Lindeman had no trou ble taking the Sportsman Open Twins Expert win later in the day. Maico man Benny Du rrough had a 12-3 day, w in n in g the Over 40 Expert class after exchangi ng m ot o wins with . Charles Emery, as well as laking second to Joe Ligh t in the Sportsman 500ccclass and th ird behi nd Todd Hamilton an d Don Lewis in the Sportsman 250cc class. Jonathon Bush and hi s Honda MT250 d oubled with wins ion the Sports man 250cc and Over 30 Novice classes. . nI
