side by side in the test tum, and they drag-raced
to the big finish- line d ouble jump. Jon carried a
litt le more mom entum th rough the last tu m and

Dus tin Smith dusted the co mpetitio n en route
to a do uble main -event wi n at the wa rmu p
ro u nd of the Dixie Classic Supercro ss . Cro ssroads County Store-b acked Smith aced both the
Iu n io r Mini a nd Snc c D-c1a ss m ai n eve n ts in
g rand style in fron t of the big grandstands at
the fairgrounds.
Smi th loo ked as if he m igh t have h ad a
tougher tim e taking a m ain-e ven t win in the 12rid er 80cr D field a fter a slo w fourth-place finish in the heat race. Hon da-rider Fredd y Row e
showed the way the en tire heat race an d loo ked
as if he wou ld be the ma n to beat in the main
even t . Suzu ki-mou nted Ma tt Nelso n took a
strong second.
W hen the gate fell for the ma in. Rowe bega n
rig h t wh ere he ha d left off and jumped out
fro nt. but his lead was short-lived as he h it the
g rou nd and h and ed th e lea d o ve r to Smi th .
Once out fron t. Smith rode a flaw less race and
pulled. a seven-second le ad by th e time he go t
th e chec ke red flag. Rowe went about thi ngs the
hard way by falling a seco nd tim e and havi n g
to rem ount an d put on a cha rge. By the flag,
Ro we ha d worked his wa y back up to place a
very res pectable second to the lo ng-gone Smi th .
Nelson pu t in a stead y ride to capture the final
podium postion, with Sc an Daley slipp ing in
ahead of Jeremy Ne lso n for fourth.
Smith had no m ista ke about w ho wa s ~ng
of th e Junio r M ini class as he back ed u p hi s
heat-ra ce w in with a co nv inci ng mai n-even twin. Smith was out of sigh t of the field when he
captu red his seco nd check ered flag, leaving the
battle for sec ond to come d own between Sam
Dixon and third-p lace fin isher Steele Barber.

When the ga te slammed to the dirt in round
one, it was CR80-mounted SC nlo n leading the

charge, wi th fellow Honda rid e r Mik e Sch une-
man an d Kyle Foltz in his tracks. Schunem an kep t
Scanlon honest for mos t of the race, w ith Scanlo n
bui lding on his lead in the final laps for the win.
Mike Epst ein got aro un d Foltz early in the moto
and was able to hold him off to finish third.
Th e second -m ot e start wa s a repeat of the
first w ith Scanlon holding th e adva ntage o ve r
Schunem an and Foltz . Sch u nema n m a tched
Scanlon's pa ce but wa sn't able to find that littl e
extr a to take the lead. Th e tw o front-ru nners di stanced themsel ves from the pack in a battle tha t
saw Scanl on pick up his seco nd moto win of the
evening . Foltz finis hed we ll ahead of Eps tein this
