JULY26 Dick Gruhn captured the vieto ry in the Fonnu la Two-Stroke class of the WERA Vintage races held at th e Road A tla nta Raceway . G ruhn w orked his strategy to maintain the lead positio n at the ftnish line over M.nk Morrow and Jami e Miller , wh o were chasing hard in the best race action of the day, Moun ted on a Kawasaki 750, Gruhn had the long legs over Morrow and Miller, both on Yamaha RZ35Os. Gruhn led the field on the start a nd ma intained his lead d own th e fron t straightaway, only to have both Morrow and Miller ou tbrake him in to tum one. "I guess I went into tum one a little conservatively," Gruhn said. " I was not too conce rned , because 1 knew that I had motor on bo th of them. M y p lan wa s to follow through the back section, letting them battle it out. (and then) pass on the long stra ight so 1 could lead across. the finish line." Morrow and Miller did n ot give up. Lap three had the lead ers going three ab reast in to tum one, with Morrow leading up the hill go ing into turns tw o and three. Now, cou ld Morrow build enou gh leed th rough the 5- tu rm. to hold off Gru hn down the straigh t? No - Gru hn again led down the hill to the start/ finish line . Phase tw o of Gruhn's plan wa s beginning to unfold. "I knew tha t we would eventually catch the Vin tage One bik es which were racin g on the track at the sa me time," Gruhn said. " I wanted to lead our group (Morrow and Mille r) through the Vintage One field so that no one cou ld get a b rea ka w ay in the traffic. It wa s a good th in g, too, because the red flag came out on lap fou r, which ended the race." Paul Garland high-sided coming out of tu m seven , which lead s onto the bac k straightaway . Apparently, Ga rland 's back tire contacted a concre te pat ch in tum seven and lost traction as he poured on the throttle exitin g the tum. Garland, mounted on a Yamaha TZ35O,su ffered a broken collarbo ne. Gruhn execu ted his plan. earning the do uble points offered each participant in this event, " I came out for practice on Friday and had nothing but bad luck," Gruhn Mid afte r the win.
