Th e normally w ide g roove turned into a slick, narrow notch that proved to be very challe ng ing, bul Pauley mad e a holes hot work for the Expe rt main -event win. Suburban Motors Ha rley-David son-backed J.R. Schnabel moved around 1-800-FASTHOG / Moro ney' s Ha rleyDav idson's Mike Hac ker to tak e second. 600cc EXPE RT N ine qualifyin g he ats wer e used to place the 57 Experts into six hea ts, with o nly the w in ne r adva nci ng o n to t he mai n. The winners of the four semis and th e seco nd -placed rid er in th e Iwo fastest semis wo uld fill out the 12-rider main . Heat wins we nt to Da n Sta nley, H a ck er, C h ris Boone , Pa u l Ly nc h , Paul ey and Schnabel. Kevin Varnes, Joe Kopp, Dave Ca mli n and Johnny Murphr ee made it in to the main with their se mi wins, while Mickey Fay a nd Brett Landes garnered the last two spots with . seconds in the fas test two semis. In the Expert main, Pauley launched off the line and was never headed, while Varnes' race lasted only o ne lap, as his Factorv KTM self-destructed. Schnabel wo r k~d hi s way in to second by th e hal fwa y point, but cou ld not d o a nything with th e fleet Paul ey. Hacker was left to fend off a challenge fro m Stanl ey, while Lynch rod e alo ne in fifth . Kop p, Ca mli n and Mu rp hree formed a th reerider pack disputing sixth pl ace. Hayden lived up to the antici pation of his pro fessional d ebut by ta ki ng bot h th e 600cc a nd 250cc Pro-Am mains o n his Ha r t Raein g / 2n d C ha nce A u to Sa les-backed Rotaxes, Th e Eades brothers , Tim and Joe, kept Ha yden ho nest in the 600cc m a in . Billy H a yni e an d Mik e McKee were seco nd and thi rd to Hayd en in the 250cc main . Todd Kluever, Ti m Ead es, Dunn ie Steward and Hayden captured the 600cc Pro-Am heats, w ith Joe Eades and Mike Bertram capturing the semis . Stewa rd got off the lin e first in the main , but Tim Eades and Hay den we re up front by lap thre e . Just p a st t he ha lfway poi nt, Hayden took ove r. Tim Eades s lipped off the pace and had to qu ickly re over to ho ld off the late-race c cha rge of his brother Joe. Steward held o n to fourth ove r Pennsylvanians To m McG ra ne an d Mc Kee. Bertram, [erad Cheney , Dale Jones and James Faulkner rounded out the top 10. 250cc PRO-AM Bill y Hay nie, Hayden and Rod Hart ze l captured the 250cc Pro-A m heats. Jason Tyer was the semi winner. In the main, Hayd en too k the lead fro m Ha ynie o n lap two and pulled away . Haynie held down second over Hartzel, McKee and Jeff Land ru m. Hayden pulled to a big lea d, w ith Haynie settli ng in to a solid second. McKee wo rked his way to th ird , wit h Che ney p assing Land ru m o n the las t la p . Klu ever, Hartzel, Cu rt Knill , Tyer and Joh n Ha rshbarger rounded out the top 10. There are also three rounds left in the 6CXJcc and 250cc Pro-Am classes. Tim Eades hold s a 13-point lead over Mike McKee in the 600s, with Joe E ades 40 back in th ird . McKee holds a 34-point lead o ve r La n d r u m in the 250s.
