It wasn't lost on Stro ud.
'1 cou ld n't hold q uite as tight lines as
he could," Stro ud noticed. "We 'd bo th
go in to the second co rner and I'd be
behind him and he cou ld pu ll it in and
I'd drift o uta little bit. The only wa y I
co uld come close to making it st ay on
line was reall y get the hack out and get
i t s lid in g, but it wa s a bit bumpy
through there. It wa s a bit hairy."
There was an incident in the first curner where he wa s near ly the victim of
overag gress ive riding on the part of others, a nd ther e isn 't a lot of room to pass.
" It was bu sy goi ng in to that hairpin at
th e end of the back s tra ig h t," Stro u d
said. "I was alway s watching for people
going up the inside w ho mi ght not be
able to stop ."
So Stroud ste pped back and took the
bigger view.
" I saw Dou g ge t pulled in, and he's
the o n ly one near me in the cha mpio nsh ip and I thou ght I've got to stay o n
as well, I' ve 's till go t to try and catch
Paul , but I wasn't go ing to push it to the
limit ," Stroud said. The Doug he spoke
of was Erion Racing teammate Doug
Toland. The AMA thought that Toland
had jumped the start and assessed him a
s top- a nd- go penalty on the third lap,
which effec tive ly dropped him out of
contention. He finished 10th.
That allowed Stroud to take a bigg er
step toward ca p tu r ing the inaugural
Pirelli Formula Xtreme title. With two
races remaining. Stroud lead s Toland by
33 points, 244-211.
Another first-time podium honoree
was thi rd-placed Dan Turner. The 33year-old Colorada n, out of Tri City
Cycles, flogged his Yamaha IU5cc in
front of anot he r Yamaha-equipped Col o rada n, Josh G raham, staying in fro nt
all the way, then leaving him in the last
third of the race.
"That wa s one of my local co mpetitors who apparently w as behind me,"
Turner sa id . " He neve r put a w heel o n
me, so I d id n't see him a nd these guys
(Harr ell and Stroud) wer e pulling away.

For m ost of th e ra ce, he would have
seen Graham cha si ng , but not a t th e
end . Turner was about 13 .5 seco nds
behind Stroud at the finish , with about a
five-seco nd cushi on on Graham.

After' that it was Mansson Technologies Michael Barnes, then Rad Greaves
on the Erion Raci ng Super Hawk Vtwin, and Hooters' Brian Gibbs, fourth
in the championship. Ricci Motorsports'
Jimmy Moo re was ninth, with Tola nd
