The even t drew so me 739 riders. T Saturday's 125cc Pro-class first-mote star t w as a barnb urn er. Rick Ryan put his Suzuki RM125 in front of Hu ffman , Baud er and Jimmy Lalvtestu s d own into the first- tu m sweeper. Dan Moore, Sean Naslu nd and Jason Dem pse y trailed the speeds ter s early on . H uf fman used his supercross prowess to his advanta ge on lap tw o. By using momen tum, driving and railing the o utside of the turn before th e whoops, Huffm an ou tbra ked Ryan and tripled th e first series of jum ps to take the lead. All the other Pros doubled the same section. Huffman' s lea d ended on th e ve rv sa me sec tion one lap later as he h it th~ dec k, a llowing Rya n to reass u me the lead, w ith Ba ud er and LaM as tu s also ca p italizi ng o n Huffman' s m is ta ke . Bauder was there and in h erited the le ad a fte r Ry a n ' s m ishap. laMastus swep t in to second. Ryan couldn't keep Huffman at bay, and on lap four Huffman berserked it pa st Ryan and set ou t for laMastus . As th e du o w aged war, Bauder turned it up a notch. Then LaMastus retaliated and seize d the opportu nity before the checkers. At the line, it was Baud er by six seconds, follow ed by LaMastus, Huffman, Ryan and Moo re. Ryan holeshot mo to two, while H uffm a n fende d off Baud e r fo r second . La M a s tus, M oo re . Dempse y and Naslu nd wer e all in close o rder as th e pack round ed the down h ill sweeper. Baud er outbraked H uffman for second w hile the p ai r was approaching th e whoops, but by then Ryan had opened up a th r ee -s eco n d cushion that he would hold to the checkers. Hu ffm an wa s certainly showing Baud er a tire in most of th e comers, an d on lap th ree he tripled into the whoops to sneak past Bauder for a split second. Then, witho u t h e s it at io n , Bau der whipped back inside and blocked Hu ffm an as the y powere d up the massive uphil l. LaM a stus was waiting in th e wings for any mi stake. H ill ing th e drop-away jum p heading to the checkers, H u ffm an le ft th e door op~n. Th is wa s LaMa stus' opportunity, so he jammed Huffm an to the o utside . Th o u gh Ry a n gra b bed th e mot o wi n, Bauder m otored to th e runner·up position, and wi th it he too k the overa ll win. Last yea r I beat Ricky Carm ichael for th ird ove rall . behind Ro bbie Hort on and Brock Sellards," In the 250cc class on Saturday, Huffma n took a wi re-to-wire win in m oto o ne , bu t Bauder captured the overa ll win with a classic 2-1 m oto tally . Ryan, Moore , Billy Binckley (who was fresh off the -l-Stroke Natio nal series), LaMastus, Scot Steffy, Dempsey and Naslund crea te d s p ecta cu lar actio n fo r th e large crowd. In m oto two, Bau d er turn ed it all around wi th a powerfu l hol esh ot and held the poi nt posi tion until tw o comers to the flag . Huffm an ran a ve ry close seco nd, over Moore, Ryan, LaM astus, Binckley, Steffy and Naslu nd until the final circuit. The top five posi tions were with in 10 seconds of one ano ther. O n th e last lap , Huffman used another classic box-ou t corner pass at the top of the fa m o u s dro p-aw ay h e ad ing for th e che cke red flag with one co rn er to go . But he left the door open at th e bottom of the hill , and Bauder m usc led it inside. H u ffm a n ra iled the berm and twist ed the th rottle up, only to hit the swingarm of Bau der ' s Kawasaki and then hi ghside. Ryan and Moore qu ickly m otored past before H u ffman cou ld rem ount to cross the line. On Su n day, H uffman turned th e o the r cheek. There was a melee a t th e s ta r t of th e firs t 250cc-cl ass m o to as H u ffm an sli d in fro nt of Bau d er and Moo re, and hi t the d eck, Baude r w as collected in the incide nt, but Moore held his bik e up an d s lo w ly w en t arou nd the m . Ryan, Steffy and Binckley also took ad va n tage of th e s itu a tio n, with Sha wn Wari ng, J. Whipple and LaM astu s in pursuit. Ryan carved some great lap times to take the moto w in . Moo re tu rned up the wi ck, taking second place late in the mota. But all eyes were on H uffman. After br u shing h imself off an d chec kin g hi s ' faculties, Huffman took hi s Tom Morg a n -tu ned , W a sho u gal M X-b a cked Kawa sa ki throu g h th e p a ck an d d isplaced Moor e on the last lap for second. J. Whipp le and Bauder rounded out the top five positi ons. The 125cc class wa s where Huffman shined. LaMastus, however, gave him a run fo r his m on~y all the w ay to the checker s in moto one . Right to th e last co rner agai n, H u ffm an le ft th e d oor open for a sp lit second , La Mastw; was very cordial to H uffman, however, and gave him enou gh room on the sweeper as the two bumped an d then sped to the checkers side by side, with Ryan taking th e win. Baud er, Ryan a n d M oore ro unded out the top five positions. In m oto two, Ba u d e r w orke d o n H u ffm a n' s lead fro m th e ga te - to no avail. Their battl e royal push ed them w ell away fro m th ird-pl a ce finis her Ryan.
