MAY19 For the second time this year, speedway motorcycles made their way to the 3/8 - m ile, 18· degree-banked oval track of Bakersfield and gave the fans quite a show of just how fast a speedway bike can go. Mike Faria, with his laydown- motor GM, a lso p roved tha t his yea r overseas on the big tracks gave him the expertise to show everyone that he is the king of lon g track. as he won the main event - jus t as he ha d done in the spring. . The format was a simple one: an el l-Scratch program. with points being awarded by finish three poin" to 001. two lor second, and """ point for third; the fourth-placed rider got no points; and to earn any points, you had to finish the race, After th ree round s of Scratch heats, John Aden, Faria and Randy DiFrancisco were tied in poi nts, and all made a d irect transfer to the main. Shawn McConnell was one back, and there was a runoff for the final spot, with Baur taking it away from Oxley o n the white-flag lap. The pole went to Aden, with Beur in gate two and McConnell in three. Faria drew gate four, with DiFrancisco on the Car outside in five . Faria launched his GM and totally outgated the field, w ith OiFranasco out second and Aden third. Faria had suc h a lead, he could have stopped and. had coffee. DiFrancisco was able to hold Aden at bay for second, with Baur having enough poni es in his motor to outnm McConnell. There was a whee1ie contes t during mtermissian. and just as Faria is the king or the long track, McConnell is th e crow n p rince or w heelies . McConnell won the co ntest af ter he motored around almost three-quarters of tho banked trod. Charlie PoweU top ped Marvin Sonnier and B~ Binnquist to win the Support man _una 1""" 5CR: I .
