Ap proaching the 40 -mi nute mark, Tortelli fina lly made his move for the lead by passing the Ho nda rid er on a fast downhill. Everts, concerned abo ut his front wh eel. wisely slowed his pace to finish second behind the yo u n g Frenchman. "I had problems with m ud in my fron t wheel," Everts said. "It made me think my wheel wa s breaking. It wa s getting more and more dangerous on th e jumps. I also lost too much ti me behind the slowest riders. They do not know what the blue flag means." Tortelli wa s pleased with his comefrom-behind win . . "I had trouble with rh ythm when I was behind Tallon and it took too much time to pass him," Tortelli said. "Once I got by, I pushed harder and then I caught Stefan. I'm very happy with that race." Fin ishing th ird wa s Vohland, who came across the checkered flag just five seconds behi nd the cautious Everts. Fr om that point on, Everts would · never re li n q u is h the lead. By the halfway mark, the Belgian had extended his lead to a full 10 seconds. By the 40j minu te mark his lead was nearly 20 secr a nd s clear of everyone else. And when th e cruise-c ontrolled Ev e rts took th e checkered flag for the ove rall wi n, he I was still five seconds ahea d . j "It took me nearl y three laps to take ' . the lead. and after that I tried to keep a good speed." sai d Everts. who seemed to ha ve ba re ly work ed himself into a sweat. "I sa w that Sebastien was behind m e a nd I wa s tr yin g to pus h it ve ry hard, because I really wa n ted to take th is victory . But then Sebastien crashed · and made things very easy for me."
