In rega r ds to "Loo kin g Back" (Issue #26, July 2), the Santa Fe TI was not in New Mexico. As a form er contribu tor to Cycle N ews, I think you should check the headlines of some past issues. Hinsd ale, Illinois, is a suburb just southwest of Chicago. It's a g rea t se tti ng for a mo torcycle race . You ma y correct me if I'm wrong, bu t outside of th e Peoria TI, the Santa Fe TI facility was, at the time, the old es t dub-pro mo ted even t in the AMA. They ran a strict course and one nig ht they woul d n' t hon or m y p r ess pass because my w hite Levis were "oi icolor w hi te." They always ran a stric t show. Fra nk Harrison kimble@ f.quik.com w You're right. The Santa Fe IT was held in lllinois - and not in New Mer ico... Editor. mailing address P.O. Box 805, Tucker, GA 300R5-0805. (770) 934-7850. And if m o x4 8 does n ' t like four-strok e mo tocro ss bikes, let him . I rea d yo u r newspaper because I am inter est ed in mot o rcycles and racin g - not p eople' s upsets. D ylan Code Los Angeles, CA What a Hoot I never thought it wo uld happen and I never th ou gh t 1 wo u ld enjoy it - but it did an d I di d . I have been ridi ng moto rcycles for 40 yea rs and mo st of that has been in th e d irt wi th some road riding. I have had the best tim es of my life riding bikes. Tw o thin gs happened in the last tw o years that I never th ou ght would happen . First, my wife and I purchased a Honda Gold Wing. I've owned a lot of s tr eet b ik es a od ha ve e n joyed the m , always thinking that Gold Wings were for old guys . They are not. Secon d , we went to a raUy. Not jus t a rally, but the Honda Hoot in Ashville, North Carolina . I though t it was going to be a bunch of people who jus t hung ou t. But it was cool and a lot of fun . And I'Il do it again. My ha t' s off to Cha r lie Kell er, Gary Smith and the staff. Keep up th e good work. Margaret and Gary Bailey Axton, VA What a bike Wow! What a bike! Are these really the same guys who bro ug ht us the XT350? Just think about it this wa y : If th e technos can build a four-stroke tha t can s pa nk tw o-strokes - just think a bo u t when it comes around again for tw ostrokes. Th e o nl y t hi ng th a t m igh t slow m e down is waiting to co m p are i t to th e supposed 1998 Jack y Martens repli ca from Husqvama. But I'm not sure I can Disappointed I'm really di sappointed in Dav id Rogers ("Voices," Issue #26, Jul y 2) being disappointed in Cycle News and the AMA . It seems that Cy cle News ' missio n is to report on competitio n and delve slightly into the news tha t affects the ind ustry. There are ple nty of ot her ven ues avail abl e tha t deal in poli tics. I've always believed tha t the AMA is primarily ma d e u p of volu n teer s, club managers, etc., w ho try to maintain som e so rt of uni form cod e of compe tition. Sure, there are sa laried members of the AMA, but the ones yo u see tracksid e wi th a rul e book in th eir back pockets usu all y have real jobs and are only dona ting their time and experience. Th ere was a time when everybody w as saying similar things about monoshock bikes - tha t th ey were too damn tall a nd s p ring y. ' Yea h, b ud d y, tw in shocks rul e: You ~~, Da vid, w hat goes aro und comes around . Thi rty yea rs ago, before techno logy sta rted refin ing raw pow er ou t of slobbering/ smoking/ bang ing old two-strokes, four-strokes ruled. Ignorance? The la test letter by mox48 (Iss ue #27, Jul y 9) proves once agai n : You ca n ' t argue with ignorance. Patrick Caselli Mo un tai n View, CA BSA remembrance Ed i to r ia l con ten t li ke Er ic Johns on' s profile 0 0 the BSA works bikes and Jeff Smit h a re m uch appre ciated . I wo u ld like to see a fo llow-up o n late r BSA co m p e ti tio n in th e la te ' 60s to 1972 , when the factory puUed the plug on the GP effo rt. As far as the story on the new Yama ha YZ400 goes, yo u d id n ' t give a ny weight figu res for the pr oduction bike. This is crucial .
