Meanwhile, Schubarth's KX250 Kawasaki wa s ultima tely outgunned by form er winner Mark Erickson o n his Apex Sports-sponsored Kawasaki KX25O, as his time of 13:55.44 was a tick over a second quicker than Schuba rth's . Pikes Peak rookie Greg Chicoine, from Jefferson, South Dakota, ca me in third on yet a nothe r KX250. Annie Brokaw ultimately finis hed 10th on her knobby-shod KTM. In on ly its second year, the Exhibi tion Sidecar class has proven to be an a b so lu te crowd favo rite. Defend in g cha m pions David Krohn and Gary Cass agai n wo wed the estima ted 10,000 race fans who lined the mou nta in hig hway to chee r their favorite riders . Their time of 15:23.96 on a Honda four-cylinderp ow ered EM L m oto cro ss ha ck sh a ttered last yea r's mar k of 17:13.01. With time of the late, grea t Floyd Clymer at 21:58.41 on his home-built Excelsior in the very first Pikes Peak Hillclimb. After knocking defending 250cc Pro champion Chuck Lee off the po le in the previous day's qualifying, Apex Sportssponsored Mark Filler, on his specially prepared Kawasaki KX25O, engaged in a three-wa y battle with Lee and his Rid gway Motorsport s H onda CR250 and KTM factory rid er Destry Abbott until a near get-off in the right -ha nd corner just above Glen Cov e. Lee, whose Perfection Porting motor sees duty only once a year during the hillclimb , could not best his 250cc record, but non etheless blistered the uphill IT course in 13 minutes, 11.47 seconds, just ahead of Abbott's time of 13:12.53. Filler recovered to finish a close thir d after watc hing Abbott and Lee swap the lead several times. The w in was Lee's third straight an d fourth in five years of 250cc Pro competition and net ted him $2500 in p urse mo ney pl us $100 in co ntingency from Motion Pro. The Vintage Twi ns clas s saw some s p irited ra cing b etween defendi ng cha mp Scott Dunlavey of Lafayette, Ca lifornia, and his mentor and fierce rival, TT legend Eddie Mulder. Dunlavey's 750cc twin Yamaha, spon-sored by Berkeley Yamaha, edged Muld er's Hat eley Enterprises ' 67 Triumph by only tw o-thousand ths o f a sec ond durin g qualify ing . Rac e day would prove no different, as the tw o twincylind er jockeys were exactly four second s apart a t th e su m m it, with Dunlav ey' s tim e of 13:39.59 se tt ing a new class record. In the Open Amateur class, rec ord holder Mickey Alz ola, from Newhall, Cal ifornia, came back to avenge his 1996 fou rt h-p lace finish with a time of 13:39.93 on his Wood-Rotax, taking the win from local favorite and 1995 class wi nner Larry Kleinschmidt, w ho now resid es in La gu na Niguel, California, but brought his quick Kawasaki 10<500 back to his native state for ye t anot her a ttem pt on the hill.
