with his day, his on-trade performance
d oing plenty to throw fuel on the rumor
that he is a wan ted man by team managers in the Wo rld Superbike Series .
"Those g uys were really r un n i n g
hard: ' Du Hamel said. "I tried to hang
w ith John an d also Carl when he came
b y. I was thinkin g, obviously like a lot of
p eople, that Carl would p ul l me up to
John. I think I was trying a little bit too
h ard. C arl pulled a gap, but th e g a p
s tayed pretty even fo r a while. Th en I
started getting p re ssure from, I think,
Chili, Russell and I d on ' t know w ho else
- b u t I k n o w I s a w t h o s e gu ys ' pit
boards coming out w h en I came around.
I w as ju s t trying to do th e be st race I
co uld and it was a faster race for me, but
it wa s a bit painful after what happened
yesterday. "
Yanagawa finall y came th rough w ith
a performance nearly equal to the one
he turned i n d u ri n g q u alify in g. The
. Japanese rid er sta rted slo w ly again, b ut
st ormed through th e pack to close in on
the Dul-lamel /Russell battle lat e in the
race . H e e ven tu a lly settl ed for fifth,
ahead of Chili, the Italian finally getling
a good result at Lag u na. Then ca m e
Piergiorgio Bon tem pi and a hard-riding
Kipp.
For Kocinski, it was a pe rfect en d ing
to a perfect weekend.
"It' s never easy to win and I'm very
happy," Kocinski sai d . "It's like a dream
for me to come here and finally get this
done. Last year I was robbed of a w in.
This year I ca me back and put a lo t of
pressure on m yself - I knew I could do
it. This tra ck h asn 't been very good,
unfortunately, to Honda - but today we
proved that all wrong. This is H ond a's
first win here sin ce Wayne Rainey won
back in 1987."
