JUNE IS o n n i e ' s Cycl e' s Tod d Levesque literally dusted th e co m p e titio n at th e AMA /NETRA Oam Good Hare Scrambles, taking his first win of the season . More th an 350 riders descended o n the Th omaston Dam for the event, which featured a course tha t started out in th e flood pl ain behind th e Darn and then c rossed th e access road and into the hills before head ing back down into the flood plain. The low-lying sections of the 10.5-mile course we re n o th i n g b u t d ry, silty whoops, so me of which were close to 5 fee t deep , with the highe r elevations being hilly and full of rocks, with a few long , dusty straightaways. Levesqu e had a dust-fre e path in fro n t of h im, which allowed him to pu ll a 10-second lead by the time he crossed th e roa d and hit the rock section. By th e end of th e first lap, Levesq ue had put 40 seconds on secondp la ced McC ann . Peculis wa s no w in third place, back anot her 20 seco nds, followed b y C aye r an d Tom ' No r to n. By the time th e riders came arou nd a t the end of the second lap, McCann had closed the gap to only 30 seconds . When the riders ca']'e into the pits, which we re two miles from the barrels, Levesq ue' s lead was down to 20 seconds, which he soo n los t in the pits, as McCann came in befo re he finis hed gassing . The three front-ru nner s hung together for several miles into the third la p, until they crossed the road back into the bl ind in g dus t. McCann, w ho a lways seems to do well in the wide-open sectio ns , took ad vantage of the dust and passed Levesq ue on the first st raightaway, taking over the lead for the second time during the race . Levesque was able to ho ld off No rton for th e re mainder of the lap, but o nly by a few sec o nd s. McCann managed to put 20 seconds on the two as the y completed the thi rd lap. Fou rth p lace was still being held b y Peculis, but Valenti ne and Cayer were dosing in fast. As the riders headed out for the fifth and final lap , it looked like it would be one of the closest r aces of th is year. McCann, Levesque and Norton we re all within 10 seconds as the t h ree riders came around the pits for the final time. Levesque just twisted the throttle back as far as it wo uld go, taki ng the checkered flag with a minute lead. McCann kept Norton at bay for the remainder of the lap, taking second place, with No rton finishing third. Ken Valentine passed bo th Cayer and Peculis on the final la p, ta king fo u rth place o verall, along with the Expe rtclass high-point ho nors.
