d id not work out that way. Nea r the end of the mota , I go t a little tired and made some mistakes. Mamicq is no t going to give up un til the end ." With the tw o Belgian rid ers now in firs t and second , all tha t was left fo r Dewi t was to find his way pa st Beirer, but that did not happen, and Beirer held on for third place, just ahead of Dewi t, Karlsso n, Frederic Bailey, Rob Herring, Brown, Dug more and Pete r Iven. Brow n wa s very unlucky once again. "I wa s firs t into the first comer, and then somebody hit my back wheel," he said. "It spun me around and I lost a lot of places ." Ever ts, on the other hand, nee de d not look over his shou lder: As he crosse d the finis h line, Bervoets was 11 seconds back and showing signs of defea t. " I go t a te rr i ble s tar t and h a d to fig ht," Bervoe ts said. "Th is tra ck is good, bu t it's hard wo rk, and Stefan was long go ne w hen I go t to second place." Moto tw o bro ught ou t a cha nge in th e tra ck, n ot to mention so me rai n . Brown, w ho was 20th after his tu rn -one mix-up, got a jump on Everts an d led into the first tum, followed by Tortelli, Sceve nels, Karlsson and Yves Demaria. Back in 12th a nd 13th , re sp ective ly, were Bervoe ts an d Vohlan d . Both wo u ld mak e some type of charge. Brown's lightning start would cou nt for very little as he dropped from first to ninth, while Bervoets had , by lap two, mo ved in to second place, followed by Beirer, To rtelli, Dewi t, Bolley and Voh land . While Vohlan d was not looking likely to tro uble Eve rts, his never-say-die attitude was giving some of the others trouble. "I go t a n eed le for th e pa in in my knee, and it feIt okay ear ly, but the pain in m y s houlder was always coming back," Vohla nd sa id . "It was ge tti ng tough, bu t they were goi ng so slow that I could keep a nice pace." Brown had wo rked his way past severa l riders and found the back wheel of Vohla nd . "I th ought we we re go ing to race a little, but I guess he had trouble at the to p of th e track," Brow n sai d . "He let me go by." Vohland was sure his Yamah a teamma te was the oniy one get ting liberties . "We need as ma n y good results as pos sible," Vohland said. "I thought he was going faster and I migh t be able to follow him, but I was not able to." Brow n then set ou t after the others. "I felt good . The track was perfect, a little like back in America," Brown said. "The sa me type of di rt , but those top few guys we re a little far ahead, and I settled in for a race wi th Bolley." Ba il ey, who had in the first mo to recorded the same blis tering times, could not mat ch Brown , however. "He wa~ fast - then it started raining; that wa s difficu lt," Bailey said . " It was g reat," Brown said of the rai n. "It was a lot of fun. We slowed a little, so it was not getting too hard to ride . [ liked the rain ." Everts and Bervoets were also feeling the cold rain on their faces, and as th e las t laps ticked , the two riders ma d e some unusual errors. "I saw Stefan up ahead and he was making mistakes, but just as I thought I could get hi m, I would do some thing stu pid," Bervoets said . Everts crossed the line and, raising his ar ms in victory, was soon lost in a ~ea of Ho nda jerseys - the Belgian racer was home, and the crowd was no t abou t to let him forget that. L "To win here in front of these people is grea t," Everts said. "We had a lot of changes in the trac k this weekend, wha t wi th the weather and everything. It was a real hard day. I want to go to South America, and Indonesia, and hopefully w rap the Cha mp ions hip up in Switzerland ," Everts said . Hold ing a s trong third place a t th e late s tages of the race, Tortelli again lost his head. " It was d ifficu lt w ith the rain," he sa id . " I just slipped and Beirer go t by me." Beirer said, "I followed him for a few laps and he was riding on the limi t. I'm no t surprised he crashed." With th e Wo rl d 250cc MX championships now head ing to Sou th Ame rica and Indonesia, the riders will not return to Eu rope un til mid -Au gu s t; a t that time, Everts will come home again. 0Belgian 250cc GP Kester, Belgium Results: June 22 , 1997 (Round 9 of 15) (Right) American Mik e Brown ho les hot the second moto and fi ni shed th e da y off in seventh o verall with an 8-5 mo to scor e.
