Thanks,IMS
This is in response to the letter from
IMS's Steve Smith (Issue #23, June 11).
Hey, Steve, a simple phone call would
hav.e been sufficient. You called me
twice last week, but didn't mention your
displeasure.
Here's my explanation: First of all,
Brian Manley, who was contracted to
ride an IMS-backed four-stroke for the
first .round, didn't ride because he'd
twisted his knee. In stepped Shaun Perolio. While in the announcing tower, I
was asked by Shaun's mechanic to "add
Primal Impulse to our lMS sponsor."
Well, this sounded to me like IMS had
another sponsor on board. I guess I was
wrong and I apologize. .
A t the fourth round of the
AMA/Ma.xima Western Four-Stroke
MX Series, you assume that 1 thought
the engine on Mike Healey's bike "gave
up," as you put it. Let's see: There was
smoke coming off the bike from the second lap of the second moto; Healey
stopped while running fourth as he
received the white flag, then he pushed
his motorcycle across the finish line.
Yes, the frame had broken and the oil
reservoir leaked on the engine. Since the
"un-investigative reporting" upsets you
personally, then why don't you tell
everybody something: Did the engine
give up? You didn't say. By the way,
technically speaking, I didn't say either.
Again, I apologize for not spending the
time to interview you or Mike aiter the
second moto.
A photo-journalist's work is always
criticized. I was busy trying not to miss
anything: taking photos and recording
all I could observe; getting quotes from
Smail, Kalos, Walters and Roth; getting
results from the AMA; interviewing
Emig, Albertyn, Lusk, Antunez, Sheak
a nd Carmichael in the press trailer.
Then I observed the auction on behalf of
my friend, Mike Young Jr., and went to
the hospital to visit him. Then I caught a
plane back to Portland. I realize now
that I should have been more "investigative."
Oh, by the way, you're welcome for
me picking up your rider, Mike Healey,
from the Portland Airport and chauffeuring him down to Albany for the fifth
round. IMS is fortunate to have such a
nice representative to the series. As
Mike kindly mentioned, he doesn't ride
for Primal Impulse - Perolio does.
