That DuHamel was able to persevere
as long as he did is remarkable, as he
finished the race with a 2-inch-wide tattered strip down the center of his rear
tire. He was not alone in battling with
tire wear, unusual in its location on the
center of the tire. The gritty little French
Canadian held on to finish fourth, about
a second behind Yates and some nine
seconds behind Mladin. DuHamel was
the only rider other than Mladin to lead
a lap of the National, the Honda rider
crossing the stripe in the lead on three
occasions.
