Dunestown Motocross By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, MAY 25 Colin Couto split moto wins with rival Andy Anaya to top a fierce 250cc Intermediate-class battle at Los Angeles County Raceway during round four of California Racing Club's 20th annual Duneslown MX Series. Quick-starter Nick Mairose shot his Noleen Yamaha out to lead the first moto. Anaya teamed up with Couto and the two got around Mairose on the first lap. RM-mounted Dan Berg was also on the move, pushing Mairose back to fourth, then went under Couto at the bottom of the over·and·under jump section to take over second place. Anaya built a slight lead, as Berg did his best to hold off a charging Couto. Mairose stayed within striking distance while keeping Jason Dubin at bay. The Berg/Couto battle over second carried them to the rear wheel of Anaya with a couple of laps remaining. Couto kept the throttle pinned down a long. choppy straight to finally get around Berg, but couldn't find the little extra to make the pass on Anaya, alld had to settle for a close second at the checkered flag. Berg held on for third over Mairose and Dubin. Couto grabbed the all-important secondmoto start, with Anaya and Berg in his shadow. Anaya was all over Couto, showing him his front fender at every opportunity. Berg slid out in the sand, handing Mairose third place. At one point, Anaya outjumped Couto for the lead, but Couto quickly retaliated in a whoop section to regain control. The intense battle for the lead lasted the entire moto, with Couto first to the checkers by a bike length. "1 knew 1 had to beat Andy so J wouldn't have to ride too hard tomorrow (the final race of the series)," Couto said. ul was tired by the second lap. I was just lucky to beat him. He was faster than me, but [ just held my own." Runner-up Anaya seemed pleased with his performance. III got behind Colin and was too busy following him: Anaya said. 'Td make a pass and pull away a little bit, and then he'd come right back and get me back as quick as I passed him. The track was so wide open and fast, it was kind of follow-the-leader." Brown then opened up a substantial lead and came home a winner for the second week in a row. Wolf took second, followed by Stapleton and Sterling in that order. Seyfferle rode a flawless race to capture the Over 30 feature. Wolf held the second spot from start to finish, while Curt Snelling and Barry Benkert fought over third place, with Snelling getting the spot with a last-lap pass. Slack zaps Vet win at KB Supercross By Bret Eckert SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 23 Blind Pig Racing-sponsored Ed Slack topped a full field of Vet Beginners at this week's round of Friday ight Supercross, promoted by KB Racing. Slack rode with two consistent top finishes on his KTM to claim the overall victory, kicking off the Memorial Day weekend in fine style. Dave Spaulding grabbed the holeshot in moto one, with the pack in pursult. Spaulding was soon challenged by Brian Purcell of Citrus Heights and the orange machine of Slack. Still within striking distance this early in the moto were Rockin B Ranch-backed Brian Ballard and Jim Garcia out of Roseville. On lap two, Ballard put on a charge and displaced Slack for third, while Ross Robertson began pressuring Garcia for !lfth. Purcell could not maintain the torrid pace the front-runners had set and, on lap three, both Balland and Slack overtook him. As the laps piled on, Ballard also began tiring, and Slack was ab1e to gain a position over him. At the checkers, it was Spaulding taking the win, Slack in second, and the CRa of Ballard and PurcelI in third and fourth, respectively.
