Saturday, July 5th Bud • SUNDAYTT The 600cc Pro heat saw Strome pilot his 500cc Yamaha single to a relatively easy win over Fiscel, Snyder, Isaacs and Fike. In the final, Strome once again grabbed the all-important holeshot, but was being pressured heavily by Fiscel and Isaacs, who in turn held a slight margin over Snyder and Fike. On lap three, Fike's race came to an abrupt halt when he crashed, uninjured, in the tight left-hand turn leading into the infield section. Meanwhile, Fiscel continued to force the issue. On the last comer leading toward the start/finish-line jump, Fiscel managed a good-enough drive to pull alongside of Strome, b.ut he came up a wheel's length short as they sailed past the checkered flag, with Isaacs in tow. Bultaco 25Occ.mounted Snyder finished a respectable fourth. "1 tapped his rear tire a couple of times - nothing too bad, just trying to rattle him a bit and let him know I was there - but he's beyond rattle:' joked Fiscel after the race. "Jim rode a real good race. 1 tried shifting up another gear at the last tum, and it pulled pretty good. That's the first time I ever dragraced anybody to a jump. I just wished I would have tried earlier in the race." "1 knew Ricky and Johnny were right there the whole time:' Strome said. "When you're out front like that, you don't have anybody to pace yourself off of. You just ride as cautious as you can and try not to slow up." Fiscel made amends in the 750cc Pro Twin class by winning a relatively uneventful heat race ahead of Strome, l1aribault Harley-Davidson/ Reynolds PIinting-backed Hoffrniester, Wertz, Gibson, Steve Boggs and Fike. Fiscel, however, lined up for the 750cc Pro Twin final with a touch of animosity toward his results in the previous 600cc main. At the flash of the green light, Fiscel bounded into the lead and immediately opened a commanding margin between himself and the rest of the field while on his way to the checkers. A three-way battle for second saw Wertz crash on lap three while negotiating the tight right-hand tum leading towards Langland Gulch. Gibson and Hoffrniester inherited third and fourth place, and would finish inches behind second-placed Strome by race's end. "After that 600 race, I really wanted to scorch them:' Fiscel said afterward. "A margin of victory like that was quite a thrill. Dave (Dave Baldwin, Fiscel's tuner) was standing on the sidelines, getting ready to throw rocks at me to try to get my attention, because I had 'such a big lead. I was really focused on winning." 0 isanti County Fairgrounds Cambridge, Minnesota Results: May 31, 1997 (Round 3 of 11) 750 PRO TW: 1. Rid< F;.a,1 (Tr;); 2. Skip Wertz (Tri); 3. John Fike (BSA); 4.
