"Two weeks ago, 1 caught the most air
over a jump in my life here. at Albany
when my throttle stuck wide open," Olsen
said. "1 came down so hard, I cracked my
tail bone. I hadn't planned on riding, but
the temptation was too strong."
Dustin Bloomfield and Walters completed the top 10.
With the overall on the line, Kalos
nailed the holeshot in the second moto,
followed by Honda rider Grayson Hart,
Highlanoi and Smail. Right behind them,
Drew and Olsen bounced into each
other, while Husky rider Mark Koehn
was next in line, followed by Scott
Holas. Davis could not repeat his firstmoto holeshot and was running just
inside the top 10.
It didn't take long for Smail to displace Highland and Hart for second
place, but it would take some serious
riding to catch the high-flying Kalas.
By the halfway point, Kalos was
already threading his way through
lapped traffic, getting around the slower
riders considerably easier than Smail
was.
"I was making sure 1could get around'
those guys'before the turns," Kalas said.
"It must have worked, because I would
read my pit board. I knew I was holding a
five-second cushion at times."
By this time, Davis had ridden his
Kawasaki into third, but was not a
threat to either Kalas or SmaiL Hart now
held on to fourth, ahead of Healey, who
was catching up. Eventually, Healey did
reel in Hart and outbraked him going
mto a corner to take over fourth place.
Up front, Kalas was in command and
had no problem maintaining his lead over
Smail, though Smail did get close at the
finish. Davis easily took third and Healey
fourth. Hart looked to have fifth place in
the bag until Highland got a second wind
and passed him right at the end.
Seventh went to Walters, followed by
Robert Naughton, Mike Hamness and
Olsen.
"I can never count Lance out," Kalos
said. "He is so fast and hard to beat.
He's got the points lead, but 'I will ~ve
it to him every race. As Mike Young Jr.
said, it's not over till the last moto."
"Kalos was fast," Smail said. "It was
going to take a real good effort to beat
him. I gave it everything I had, but he
just had a little more today."
