when 1 crossed the top that I've messed my ride up with that little bobble at the bottom, and then when 1 got my time 1 was amazed, because 1 wasn't even looking for it to be close to thal" Greg Williams attacked the hill aboard his father's four-cylinder, 10foot-long, nitro-burning Honda. The center groove was an easy target for Williams, and once over the first kicker, the red-and-ehrome machine kicked up a huge rooster tail the length of the ffiidsection of the hill. Once over the top, the 6.1621-second time was announced, placing Williams in third place, behind Steve Dresser, who had run a 6.0992 earlier in the class. Williams' return in round two had only one bobble as he got a kick-out to the left coming off the first kicker. As the Honda got corrected, Williams poured the coal to the fourcylinder as he charged right up the center and over the top of the hill. His 5.8642-second run put him in second place. "1 just kept the throttle on and it just kept motorin' straight, and so 1 stayed with it, and everything worked out not too bad," Williams said. After having problems starting his bike, Price returned to the starting box within 10 minutes to obtain his winning ride. Price jumped onto the hill's face, getting a lot of air off the first kicker. Opening the throttle upon landin& Price got a squirm as the Harley dug for traction. Still on the straight and nurow groove cut out ahead of him, he motored to the second kicker, cracking the throttle one more time before floating over the top to finish with a time of 5.7827 seconds, winning the class with a single ride. "Over the hump, you know, 1 backed out of it," Price said. "It set back down real nice for me, and I was able to come back into the throttle, and it just pinned me back and it laid right out on the hill. It was pretty quick!" Lou Gerencer Jr:s first ride bounced him off the first and second kickers as he drifted right at the lights to clock a 6.3653. Gerencer's second run proved faster, but it came with a price: The wheelie-plagued ride ended in a crash over the top of the hill, in which Gerencer sustained a smashed wrist and a broken hip as a result of his landing. Wally Fowler barked out two rides aboard his GSXR750, clocking a 7.0082second pass for his first effort. His 6.6154-second number-two pass ended harshly as he cleared the top of the hill airborne. Fowler cleared what was described as a "20-foot aerial." Landing hard, Fowler injured himself, and wound up going to the hospital with a broken shoulder. l:N White Rose M.C.
