(Left) Bernd Eckenbach bounced back from a moto-one DNF to card fourth the second time out. (Above) Gert Jan Van Doorn scored a second in moto one, but a moto-two fifth put him third overall behind Kurt Nicoll. '1 stayed out of trouble early on and just tried to ride without moving my upper body more than necessary," Darryll King said. There were no first-lap dramas in race two, as Johansson powered away with the holeshot. Bartolini was handed second when Smets hit trouble after 10 minutes. "A rock from Peter's rear wheel hit my throttle-cable mounting," Smets said. "1 had to tour to the work area, and restarted last. What a day! I came here not even needing to win to defend my points lead, with no pressure, and the track was perfect for the fourstrokes. I crashed into the trackside tires when I was 20th with five minutes to go. 1 was trying too hard, but it was all-ornothing by then." A Yamaha 1-2 looked to be in the cards, but Bartolini was just too eager to be the one in front. "I just tried too hard," Bartolini said. "The rear wheel came around as I tried to pass Peter on the half-hour and I high-Sided. The clutch lever was broken off and 1 had great difficulty restarting and could not attack again." Nicoll inherited second and actually seemed to be closing on Johansson at times, but the Swede was always in control. '1t would have been so easy to make a mistake," Johansson said. "I just concentrated on keeping Kurt five or six seconds back. I wanted to win with maximum points, but I would have let Andrea go if it had been necessary to ensure the overall today." Nicoll was content with second. '1 tried to pull Peter back, but I was right on the limit and came near to crashing several times," icoll said. Champion King was again not a happy man in the early stages, but advanced strongly from sixth to third during the second half of the race. "I finally got to grips with the track, but it was difficult for us today," Shayne King said. "We've still got some things up our sleeves at KTM, however, and we'll be back." Brother Darryll was once again the hero, gritting his teeth for an advancing seventh. Bowen was eliminated by a defective clutch ("I had to push the bike back to the pits in the end," he said. '1t wouldn't even pull up a small climb."), after chasing Martens for 11 th for half the race. t;N Czech 500Cc GP Jinin, Czech Republic Results: June 1, 1997 (Round 5 of 12) MOTO 1: 1. Title rivals Chicco Chiodi and Sandro Puzar chased rum home in race two, but each had had a downer in race one, which enabled Federici to close the points gap.
