c j ----------------------',..--~--------------------~ The American Motorcycle Institute is the la test in the long line of sponsors that have signed up to back the AMA Women & Motorcycling National Conference, scheduled for July 13-16 in Westerville, Ohio. According to the AMA, AMA clubs and promoters have reported more than $4.5 million in charitable contributions in 1996, more than doubling the figures reported in 1995. In· ~he process of organizing and promoting more than 3300 road riding and racing events in 1996, AMA-chartered clubs and promoters raised funds for a wide variety of causes. Twenty-four teams have entered the 1997 Sidecar World Cup that begins at the Hungaroring in Hungary on May 25. The entries for the FIM road racing championship are led by multi-time World Champion Rolf Biland and his passenger Kurt Waltisperg. Kawasaki Team Green will offer pit support for the upcoming Silver State 300 on June 20-22 in Nevada. All Kawasaki teams/riders interested should call 714/770-0400, ext. 226, prior to June 9. The 1998 Mikuni Fast Date~ calendar, produced annually by Jim Gianatsis, will be ayailable at the Laguna Seca round of the World Superbike Championship in Monterey, California, on July 10-13. In addition, the riders and girls fea tured in the calendar will be on hand at the World Superbike Fan Party, scheduled for Friday night, July 11, at the Doubletree Inn in downtown Monterey. NASB Formula USA Champion Tray Batey is currently being featured in a 30second television commercial for Valvoline. The spot, which is being aired nationally, also features NASCAR's Mark Martin, drag racer Joe Amato and Indy Car racer Gil de Ferran. Batey is defending his F-USA title on a Valvoline-backed Suzuki. The British in the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Rally will be held on June 27-29 at the Elowah River Campground in Dahlonega, Georgia, and is open to all British-motorcycle owners, riders and enthusiasts. The 10th annual event is being sponsored by the Greater Atlanta British Motorcycle Association. Rain(!) drowns out SRringfield Mile The Holiday Inn-Palmdale has been designated as the official race headquarters for the CMRRA, Dragonfire Racing, Moto Liberty Westcoast 125cc GP Shoot Out and The Return of the Superbikers on the Streets of Willow Springs on June 28-29 in Rosamond, California. For reservations, call 805/947-8055. he Indianapolis 500 wasn't the only race spoiled by rain on Memorial Day weekend. . For the second year in a row, rain forced the rescheduling of the Springfield Mile, rouna four of the AMA Grand National Championship Series. After making the .12-hour journey from the rescheduled Mineral Wells, West Virginia, Half Mile on May. 23, the.Grand National teams arrived at the Springfield State Fairgrounds and a waterlogged race track under continually threatening skies. The Sunday race was immediately postponed to the Monday rain date, but conditions did not improve, forcing the AMA and event promoter Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association to pull the plug. Now, just like last year, the decision has been made to run a double-header on Labor Day weekend,August 30-31. "We are·going to do the May race on Saturday and the Labor Day race will once again be on Sunday," said Denise Hartley, executive director of the IMDA. "We're not sure what we are going to do with the National Hot Shoe race that was originally scheduled for Saturday. Of course, the Grand National takes precedence over the Hot Shoe race, but we recognize that these kids need a place to race, and we are going to have another board meeting to determine whether or not we might try to run at least a partial 600 program during that weekend." Davey Camlin won both races at last year's Springfield Mile double-header. Former Grand National Champion Chris Carr was the last rider to win a Springfield Mile on Memorial Day weekend, accomplishing the feat in 1995. T Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino, California, has announced that the track used for the AMA Nation.al MX Championship round will stay in place through July 6. Beer Nuts brand snacks will be fea turing a Harley-Davidson Sportster as part of its national retail sweepstakes. Th.e Free Ride Sweepstakes is tied to the AMA, and five Beer Nuts Challenge events will be held at key AMA Grand National Dirt Tracks. The Hillsboro Community Civic Club will play host to an Arenacross on June 6-7 at the Hillsboro Horse Show Grounds, roughly 25 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. The races will feature a $3000 purse, with all proceeds from the event going to various local charities. Roger DeCoster and his Suzuki Dream Team will be at the Sequoyah Junior High School in Doraville, Georgia, on June 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The purpose of the visit is to promote Drug Free Youth in America. A public hearing will be held on June 3 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers. in Beaumont, California, to decide the fate of the Rainbow Cycle Park. Those wishing to show support for the park are encouraged to attend. For the past six months, the'park has been in the planning stages with the City of Beaumont to open a 60-acre facility. Roswell Fun Machines has formed a new road race team, the Ride for Kids Race Team, aka Roswell Fast Ride for Kids. Rider Rod Burr will pilot a Bimota SB6 In selected NASB Formula USA and WERA Formula One events this year, with all racing and event profits going to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation - making the team a 100 percent charitable, not-for-profit endeavor. The AMA has received more than 20 - applications for the 1997 Pro Scholarship Award, and those applications are curren tly being reviewed. "It's encouraging to see the quality of all the student racers who have applied this year," said Merrill Vanderslice, AMA Pro Racing director of competition. "Being a professional racer takes a great deal of tiine and energy. It takes a very special person to be a Pro racer and an honor student at the same time."
