Hodges doubles at Rolling Hills MX By Jay and Sharon Hauser REIDSVrLLE, NC, MAY 5 Team Green rider Mitchell Hodges may not have won the 125ccA and 250ccA-c1ass wins at the fifth round of the U.S. Eastern Spring Motocross Series with a dean sweep, but he did win the motDs thnt mattered most to come away with the overall in both classes. Heavy rains on Saturday had riders dreading Sunday morning's practice, but when the Birch Creek Promotions brought their series to the Side by Side Racing-promoted Rolling Hills Cycle Park' the riders were treated to a perfectly prepared race course. With a great track and nearJy 500 riders on hand the racing was excellent. Hodges could only manage to wock his Fox/ FMF /Gary Bailey MX Schools/Mark TV /WD40/Scott USA-backed Team Green Kawasaki into third by the time the checkered flag fell on the first 125cc A moto, bareJy being squeezed out by Suzuki of Winston Salem's Chad ewton and the always-fast Kawasaki/Suzuki of Durham KX-mounted Bobby Stovall with Stovall winning. • When the gate dropped for 125cc A moto two it was the Hodges show all the way from start to finish as he was simply untouchable. The battle for second would prove to be one of the best races of the day as a five-way battle wasn't decided until the final lap. In the end, Newton would record another second to'nab second overall while Stovall slipped to fifth to take third overall. South Carolina ace Chuck Shirley put in a great ride to finish third in moto two, netting him fourth on the day ahead of Yamaha-mounted David Price. The 250cc A ranks would prove to be even tougher on Hodges than the 125cc class, thanks in part to the return of one of the Southeast's favorites, Chad Lough. Lough was enjoying the Nationals two years ago with a bright future when he nearly lost his life in a terrible crash. He's since made it back, despite the badly broken back. Hodges nearly took the first 250cc A moto win, but took a hard get-off on the front straight saw him cartwheeling to a stop. Once remounted, Hodges worked back up through the field and eventually got by Lough for second on the last lap. Time ran out, however, and Stovall had again taken the first-moto win over Hodges with Lough right in tow. Lough busted out to lead the early going of the second moto and rider Mark Wagner, Shirley and Stovall would fall to Hodges by lap three. Lough never let Hodges slip away more than a few seconds to the end of the moto and earned an impressive second. Shirley again was on the gas and displaced Stovall for third while Wagner held off Brewers Kawasaki's Chris Anstead for fifth. The 12Scc C class gave the crowd their money's worth with some tight racing in both motos. Rockhill, South Carolina's Kyle Stover came away with the first-moto win over Cox, but Cox would turn the tables and score an important second-moto win. Cox's ride would put him on top of the podium with Stover taking second. . Results 50 (4--6): I. Taylor Futrell (Actk'2. D.J. Ellis (KTM); 3. Tyler Bright (KTM): 4. Zach Alear (KTM): 5.
