Lei van began his charge to the front after a three-kick start that saw Chris Caplinger put his electric-start ATI< jnto the first corner first. Yamaha riders Chad Busenbark and Ken Yount followed closely and were soon joined by Leivan at aroun.d the two-mile mark. Lapped traffic became a factor on the second circuit which allowed the first six AA riders to be separated by no more than IS seconds after three laps. Lap four saw Caplinger fade slightly from the lead pack after an off-the-course excursion while attempting to pass a slower group of riders left him on the ground. After lap five, Leivan and his Yamaha where in the lead, followed by Busenbark, Leigh Letellier, Rusty Reynaud, and Yount. Leivan would surrender the top spot when he stopped for fuel going into lap six but would still leave the pits in good shape - third behind Busenbark and Letellier, and just in front of the KTM of Reynaud. These four riders stayed close through lap six, but would lose Letellier on lap seven. Letellier's back tire hit a rock squarely, sending Letellier into a vicious high-side, and as a result he injured his ribs and called it a day. Leivan would make the final pass of the day, getting past Busenbark on lap seven. From that point, Leivan guided his Surdyke Motorsports/Silkolene/Scott-backed Yamaha WR250 to the checkered flag. Busenbark wouJd stay close, waiting for an opportunity that never came, and ultimately finished 17 seconds behind Leivan. Reynaud finished another two minutes back in third, followed by Caplinger and Yount. Jamie Jennings took a nearly wire-to-wiTe victory in the A class ahead of a charging Kevin Boyle. Boyle would make up over two minutes in the last half of the race but came up 19 seconds shy of Jennings' Yamaha. These two riders were sixth and seventh overall, and two of the eight riders that completed nine laps. David Dillingham emerged the winner of the Veteran (30+) class. He would take the lead on lap two and never let it go, leading a Yamaha sweep of the top four places in the class. He was followed by Kreg Simons, Ken Hulsey-and Jon Simons. Results 0/ A: 1. 'll Suzuki RM125-mounted Mark Tilley and Yamaha YZ250 rider Colin Couto picked up their slice of Suzuki and Yamaha contingency-money pie by winning the 125 and 250cc Intermediate classes, respectively, as Los Angeles County Raceway played host to the opening round of California Racing Club's 20th annual Dunestown Series. Tilley could do no wrong in the first 125cc Intermediate moto. He grabbed the lead right out of the gate and would set an untouchable pace aboard his LBZ/ Lunde / Anaheim Suzukibacked ride for the win. Andy Anaya finished second, but not without plenty of pressure from Shawn O'Brien during the final few laps. Jason Dubin held on for fourth over Clint Shepard. Tilley holeshot round two over Dubin, Anaya and Nick Mairose. O'Brien was definitely the fastest rider during the opening lap, coming from a last-place start to hound Dubin in third. By lap three, O'Brien 'Pushed Dubin back to third and was slowly starting to catch Tilley. (Right) Jason Simmons (273) won both 250Cc motos at round two of the Dunestown series at Edwards Air Force Base In Southern California, O'Brien finally caught Tilley as they took the white flag. O'Brien had a faster line through a whoop section to lead Tilley into the next tum, but once there Tilley got underneath him and pushed him out to retake the lead. O'Brien was all over Tilley and got a better drive coming 'down off the over /under jump section to steal the lead for good in the final turn of the race. O'Brien's second-moto win topped the 2-3 score of Anaya for second overall. Colin Couto came out on top of a heated battle for the first 2SOcc Intermediate win on hjs Race Shop / Thousand Oaks Yamaha-backed yz. Mairose finished second ahead of Anaya, Rich Truchinski and O'Brien. Truchinski holeshot the second moto and led every lap for the win. O'Brien dogged Couto for most of the race before stuffing him in a tum toward the end of the moto to finish second. Couto's third-place finish edged out the 4-1 of Truchinski for the overall win. O'Brien (5-2) came out the winner in the points tie with Anaya (3-4) and Mairase (2-5) for third overall. Results P/W (0-6): 1.l..eeSaul (Yam); 2. Logan Russell (Yam). P/W (7-9): 1. Bell pretty much had things go his way in the Junior Vet Novice motes after nailing both holeshots, leaving the real race for second place. Brad Pietro came on strong in the second moto to take home the second-place trophy with a 3-2 score. William Welchhance couldn't match his fust~moto pace and went 2-4 for third, with Honda riders Gabi Abayou and Assaf Alush rounding out the top five. BeU didn't have it as easy in the Vet Novice class as Mike Brinkley and John Gomez supplied some serious competition. In the end it was Bell prevailing to earn l:tis third and fourth moto wins and another chunk of Suzuki contingency money. Brinkley broke free of the pack for a couple of second-place finishes. Gomez and Mike McGuire each earned a third-place finish with McGuire doing it in the tie-breaking second round, The first 250cc Novice moto start belonged to Bell, but within a lap Jason Simmons had motored his way into a lead that he would hold until the finish. Bell had his hands full with Jeff Pennington, but managed to hold him off for second'. Round two belonged to Simmons as he went wire-to-wire for the win. Bell and Pennington argued over second until Pennington dropped off the pace. Stephan Moore charged through the pack to nip Bell on the last lap for second place, but Bell's 2-3 finishes earned second over the 3-4 of Pennington and &-2 of Moore. Results P/W (D-6): 1. Perhaps the rider who was most ready was IO-year-old Derek McMahan who posted two wins on the day. McMahan topped both the 80cc and Supermini classes, and he also competed in the combined Beginr).er class, but his smallJbore machine just didn't have the power to hang with the bigger machines, and when it was aU over, Yamaha rider Chad Shellenberger scored the overall win ahead of Darrell Sharp and Mike Riley.
