BLOUNTVILLE, TN, APR. 27 Although everyone else in the Southeast got wet, those who came out for "Tony D. Day" at the Muddy Creek Raceway rode dry. Former Motocross National Champion Tony DiStefano buzzed arou.nd all day on his fourwheeler, checking out the MCR track for the next day's Tony D. MX School. DiStefano's skills demonstrator, Rich Schmidt, earned a fourth overal.l in 125cc A class ~ and a broken ankle in 250cc A. Former Suzuki pilot Chad Lough, on hand to visit, was pressed into service for Monday's Tony D. School in Schmidt's place. Surprised? Remember, Lough broke his back two years ago... but then, so did Doug Henry. "I've been going to Tony D. schools since I was six," grinned Lough. "So I pretty much know his routine. And I've been riding a mountain bike for a while now, getting to feel better all the time. This won't be a problem." Lough's best friend and riding buddy Jim Neese shared 2S0cc A moto wins with 125cc A/2!5+ A victor Kevin Walker. Neese pocketed the 250cc A prize money, however, thanks to his win in the second moto. A-class rookie Jon Boruff holeshot both 250cc A motos, making Neese and Walker work to put him behind them. Boruff held his ground against veteran Jim Chester and pulled off third overall, leaving fourth for Chester. Chester's teammate Billy Liles rounded out the 250cc A top five. Walker easily handled the l2Scc A class, followed by Chester and Boruff. Neese struggled to fourth in the first moto and dropped out on the start of round two with a broken silencer. "It must have been already cracked pretty badly in the first moto," said Neese. "The 125 was down on power a little bit. Then when the gate dropped and I opened the throttle all the way, the silencer just blew off." Walker, Chester and Liles went one-twothree in l£5+ A, providing terri6c racing action on nearly every lap. Later in 30+ A, Liles and Nicky Baker (aboard a Suzuki this season) argued over the lead in both motos. Liles emerged victorious, but Baker was close enough to make things interesting. The event proved to be a challenge to all 192 riders, as the 5.6-mile course consisted of very rocky, slick trails, natural terrain grass track sections, and a gnarly creek that exited into the scoring chute. Rain in the morning made things slippery for the first couple of laps, but as the race wore on the trail dried out and became very tractable.
