Winsett wallops Trail-Way Short Track By len Breech HANOVER, PA. APR. 19 With the next short track being held the same night as the Nationals, Rick Winsett made the most of what wa probably his last chance up against the local ational-caliber riders at TrailWay Short Track for the season. Winsett fought off Georgie Price and Kevin Varnes for the Sportsman win after finishing second to Varnes in 600cc Pro. Don Mullen II gave Mike McKee his second straight loss in the 250cc A final. Roy Miller inherited the 600cc A win when 30+ winner Bob Sweeten broke down on the final lap. Bob Babcock topped the 40+ class, while Don Provost beat Nick Taylor for the 7SOcc A final. A pair of recent Dec graduates took the 125 and 2SOcc B finals, as Travis Slade won the 125cc and fOffiler class cha'mp Corey Harmes won his second 250cc main of the season. Guy Dickinson of New York state easily topped the 600cc B class. In 600cc Pro, Winsett jumped in front of Kevin Varnes, Mike Varnes and Mike Klopp. Using a high line he found in the heat race, Varnes shot into the lead as they came off the second turn on the second lap. While Varnes kept his KTM Sportcycle-sponsored KTM in front for the remainder of tlie race, Winsett held onto second despite pressure from Mike Varnes and Price. The Sportsman final had a surprise at the front as A-c1as rider Don Mullen n led Price, Winsett and Mike Varnes. By the end of the opening lap, Winsett and Price had passed Mullen and battled for the lead, Winsett down low and Pace up high in a line similar to that which Kevin Varnes used in the Pro final. By the third tap, Kevin Varnes had taken over third, but in this class, a poor start can't be made up too easily. Winsett, Price, Kevin Varnes and Mike Varnes finished in that order. APR. 13 ational competitor Mike Varnes, took a pair of wins in the Sportsman and 600cc Pro over a field of several National number holders as Shippensburg Speedway launched its '97 short track series on a chilly, windy Sunday afternoon. Georgie Price slipped by Roy Miller with just over a lap left for the 250cc A win, while Bob Sweeten took the 30+ and Tom McGrane Jr. topped the 600cc A finals. Little-guy wins went to Evan Baer in the SOcc Oil-Injected class, Brandon Robinson in SOcc (4-6), while Frankie Locke remained undefeated for the season thus far in SOcc (7-8). This woke Pace up, and he challenged over the rest of the race, somehow finding some room at the bottom of the fourth turn as they came down to the white flag to take the lead, which he held to the end.
