Brandes, McGavran team up at Perris Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, APR. 19 Team Chaparral's Mike Brandes and Bryan MeGavran teamed up to dominate both ]25cc Pro and Intermediate dasses during the GFI Winter Series Show Down Warm Up held at Perris Raceway. The single 3O-minute Pro race saw Brandes grab the lead from the get-go and almost instanUy open a five-second cushion. Ty Kady was the hardest-charging rider on the track and moved from outside the top ]0 to second within the first five minutes of the race. Brandes soon began to get some pressure from Kady on his Trick Racing-backed Suzuki, but Brandes responded by upping the pace a notch. Soon Brandes opened up the gap again while Kady appeared to be suffering from arm pump, which was evident by the shaking of his arms when he skied over the 75-£001 double just past the finish line. Jiri Dostal and Steve Andrich smelled blood and soon moved to second and third respectively. During the last 10 minutes of the race, Brandes performed for the crowd by doing everything from heel-clickers to no-handers. In the end, Brandes went on to win while Dostal was passed by Andrich for second, but Andrich gave Dostal a break by falling two laps from the finish and ended up third while Kady rounded out the top four. There was no stopping Bryan MeGavran in the Intermediate class as he posted a doubleO)oto victory over the AXO/ZLT-backed Kawasaki of Jason Padilla. Oscar Valdez was perhaps MeGavran's primary competition, but a loose set of I)andlebars ultimately ended his charge. Mike Baker traded his Yamaha for a Honda and turned in an awesome set of motos in the Vet lntermediate class. Randy Skinner gave chase in both motos, but could not match Ba ker' s pace and settled for second in both motos. Ron Lawson finished off the day third while Wind-sponsored Pete Vetrano rounded Qut the top four. Chris Nihan and Adam Bisso had two all-out batUes in the 80cc ovice dass with Nihan prevailing on his fMF-backed Suzuki. Rich Owens posted a solid third for Team ZLT while Mike Alessi and Tyler Duncan rounded out the top five. Josh Cavanaugh was king of the 125cc Novice dass after a double-moto battle with Dustin Jameson. Cavanaugh appeared to have.a sharper edge and faster lines, which may have been parUy responsible for his success. Jeremy Duncan had one of his best rides for third while holes hot master Jake Elkins and Merle Zeiders rounded out the top five. Twelve-year-old Gerard Patin topped the charts in the 125cc Beginner das with a twomota sweep over Kane Jameson and Chad Gill. Patin raced unchallenged all day on his PJ] ISIamin' Motor Sports Yamaha. Results EULESS, IX, APR. 20 Round two of the 25th annual Texas Series at the new Mosier Valley USA park drew 428 entered racers, and in the. 125 and 250cc Pro dasses, Jeff Dement made his overnight trip from the Charlotte Supercross worth his while by racing for all four moto wins. North Texas Yamaha's Caleb Leath grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moto and led the first five laps of the nine-lap moto before Dement was able to squeeze by the younger racer after Mosier Mountain. Dement held on for the win, with Leath staying 011 his back wheel for two more laps before Ross Dhayer overtook his position to finish second. Jason Edwards wicked it·up on the final lap to pass Leath, as well, for third, while D.L. Wood capped off fifth place behind Leath at the checkered flag. Moto two saw NTY I Acerbis/Sidi-backed Michael Peacock on the gas for the holeshot spot and holding on to the lead for the first two laps before Dement took an inside move in the tum after the biggest jump on the course. Peacock kept his second-place position into the final lap until Edward" charged upon him, edging in front of Peacock in the finaJ turn at the bottom of the finish-line hill, just short of the checkered flag. . The Vet Intermediate and Experts were combined, but scored separately. Chris Pritchett grabbed the holeshot in the Expert ranks, but Team Green's Dennis Hawthorne was too strong for Pritchett as he took the lead in sh rt order and led the pack on to the checkered flag. Moto two was once again led by Pritchett, but only until lap two when Hawthorne took over the lead over Mosier Mountain and never looked back. Pritchett held the number-two spot all the way to the finish, followed by Mike Merlo, Todd Watson, and Hoot Parker. Houston youngsters took the 50cc Stock and Modified wins. Austin Roden went ]-1 for the Teeny Mini Stock overall, while Luke Bledsoe daimed the Teeny Mini Modified ranks. Results 50 STK (4-8): 1, Austin Roden (MCW); 2. Weston MuJloch (L:m)i 3. Collier triumphant at B.luegrass Motocross By Susan Willian CLAY CITY, KY, APR. 13 Eastside Suzuki's Tommy Collier aced the overall wins in the 125 and 250cc A cJasses at the Ale 8 Spring Championship at Bluegrass M.X Park, round two of the ]4-race Thoroughbred Series. Robby Cook was the early leader in the first 12Sc" A moto with Collier running second. The pair challenged each other around the redesigned course to go side by side UlTough U,e stutter jumps, as Collier took charge. Cook tried to come back but just couldn't quite catch the new leader, Collier. who went on to take the checkered flag. Collier shot off the gate like a bullet in the second moto, as Cook came around mid pack. It was no contest for Collier, who led from start to finish to chalk up another win for the overall. Cook managed to work his way up through the pack to finish second. Gary Winters grabbed the early lead in the first 250cc A moto, as Collier played chase until midway th.rough lap one when he took charge. Collier again pulled away from his competitors to take the win followed by Winters and Cook. Cook shot off the gate in the second moto, followed by Winters, Jason Schmidt and Collier. By lap two, Collier had moved into third and began to hound second-place Winters. Lap.three saw Collier move into second then open up his throttle to chase Cook. Collier, determined to take the lead, accomplished his goal before the start of lap four as he flew past Cook to win his fourth moto of the day and second- class. Meanwhile, Winters tried in desperation to catch Cook but was unsuccessful as Cook finished second, followed by Winters and Schmidt. Shawn Oliver was the rider to catch in the first moto of the Schoolboy class although he had to deal with the charging Nick Wolfe. Wolfe could not make any of his pass attempts stick for long and finished second with Michael Campbell and Noah Karnes in third and fourth, respectively. The second moto saw Oliver fire off the starting lin. pursued by Karnes, Wolfe and Michael Campbell. Wolfe got by Karnes and set out after Oliver but crashed, leaving Oliver without any pressure as he sailed to the checkered flag. Wolle remounted at the rear of the pack to finish sixth while Campbell claimed second and Kames third. Results 125 A: I. Tommy Collier (Su~; 2. Robby Cook (Kaw); 3. Rusty Mt£ubbin CHon>; 01.
