stopped me dead. I had to get the bike unwrapped and get it going. I started back p in about 25th and just started plugging away." As the race continued on, Carmichael continued to stretch his lead over" Huffman, Decker, Sellards, Primal Impulse rider Shaun Perolio and Ferry. Windham, utilizing a number of very creative and unorthodox lines, continued his charge, moving into seventh place. On lap four, Windham, who had now worked his way into fifth, locked horns with Johnson as the two clipped wheels and hit the dirt. Both got up immediately and continued on. Up front, Carmichael was on cruise control, clicking off one smooth, methodical lap after another. By this time it was apparent that he was in complete control of the race. However, behind him all hell was breaking loose as Huffman, Decker and Ferry fought valiantly for position. Windham was again driving hard, putting a declarative block pass on Pingree near the scoringtower turn.. At the halfway mark, Windham had passed Johnson and nearly got Decker on the steep, mind-boggling Mount St. Helen downhill. He would ultimately move around him a few turns later and immediately begin to reel in Huffman. On the next lap, Windham passed Huffman in a sweeping left-hand bowl turn, and was now all alone in second. As the race neared the showing of the two-lap board, Carmichael led Windham by nearly 30 seconds, while Decker, Johnson, Ferry and Reynard battled among themselves for positions. Huffman faded back to eighth place. With two laps to go, Carmichael still led, with Windham second and Rey" nard, who had passed both Johnson and Decker in the back horseshoe section, third. Ferry, meanwhile, moved around Johnson to nail down fourth place. On the last lap, Carmichael backed off a bit to wave to the appreciative crowd, while Windham rode around in second with a comfortable lead over Reynard, Johnson and Sheak, who had put a clever move on Ferry for the position. Roncada would finish seventh, and teammates Decker and Pingree took eighth and ninth, respectively. Craig was 10th. "It went well and I'm happy," said a relaxed Camiichael, who, with his 1-1 showing, now leads Sheak in the series by 38 points. "I got a good start in that moto and rode my own race and put in some good laps. ow it's on to Mount Morris and hopefully I can do the same there. I'm a little bit more familiar with that track than I have been the last couple of weeks." Sheak, happy to be on the right track and second in the series points, is optimistic about the remainder of the season. 'Tm pretty happy and I'm glad 1 got on that podium," he said. "It's a long season and I have lots of time. These two races out here (Sacramento and San Bernardino) do not really suit my style and I've always had problems with them. I'm looking forward to going back East, and I'm more comfortable there." l:N Glen Helen Raceway San Bernardino, California Results: May 11, 1997 (Round 3 of 13) 250 MOTO ~ 1. Jeff EnUg (Yarn); 2.
