Sweeten topped Jim Hollister in both classes. Speaking of youngsters, Roy Miller handed Mike McKee his first 250cc A loss since sometime in. the '95 season. The Varnes cousins split the .Pro classes, with Kevin topping the Sportsman, and Mike getting the good start to take the 600cc Pro race. Ace Phillips ,took second in both. Nick Taylor easily won the 750cc class and Bob Babcock topped the Over 40 division. The B riders saw Salvy Prisco's Yamaha keep its pieces together to easily win the 125cc class, while Ben Miller took the 250cc-class win and Mike Lloyd the 600cc finals. The Locke brothers took two of the three 50cc finals with Steve winning the SOcc OiHnjected class and Frankie winning his third straight SOcc 7- to B-year-old race. Brandon Robinson edged Jeff Haldeman in the SOcc 4- to 6-year-old class, and Shawn Baet took the 6Scc win, In the always-exciting and unpredictable BOcc bOut, Jared Mees edged out Chris Klinefelter. Sweeten got a huge step toward the 30+ win when one of his main competitors, Jim Hollister, was sent to the penalty line. That ticked the normally calm Hollister off, as he shot out of his fourth-place opening-lap position to get-into second by Nick Taylor and Bob Babcock as they went down the back straight on the second lap. While he turned his anger into a second place, he couldn't get by Sweeten over the remaining laps. McKee jumped into the 250cc A lead over Miller, Mullen and Paul Allison and appeared to be on his way to another win, but Miller slipped under him as they came off the second turn on the second lap. For the rest of the race, M:cKee tried to get by but couldn't get the lead from the quick Miller. Kevin Varnes put his KTM Sportmotorcycle quic;kly in front of Phillips, Mike Varnes, Gary Clark and the rest of the 600cc Pro class, He kept his margin at a few lengths most of the way. Mike Vamestried to work on Phillips for second, but the younger Phillips held his .ground, Results 65: 1. Shawn Baer (Kaw); 2. Leroy Bussey (Raw); 3. Brian Eckhart CTri) (Suz), BURLESON, TX, APR.13 Burleson MX Park played host to round one of the '25th annual Texas Series, where American Suzuki's Jacob Martin blew into Burleson, along with the wind, establishing himself as the one to be reckoned with by winning boll, molos in the 125cc Intermediate and 125cc Open events and then picking off the first moto of the 250cc intermediate class before a crash in the second moto cost him a perfect day of racing. The 492 entrants who made up the race format for a long day of racing were greeted with unseasonably cold and windy weather, confirming the old saying, '1f you don't like the weather in Texas, stick around - it'll change." Martin was flawless in the 125cc ranks, quickly taking the lead spot and holding it to the finish. Second-best competition came from a local rider, Honda Town/ Answer/NGK's Shawn Smith, who battled with Martin at the starts but had to take a backseat to the Oklahoma rider at the finish line, The 250cc Intermediate race saw Shawn Smith take the lead off the start, followed by Matt Lineman, but Martin wasted little time in taking the front position on lap one. He then held it all the way to the finish. Lineman moved around Smith early in the race, but a fall after the finish line at the beginning oflap two put Lineman at the back of the pack and Smith in the number-two position. J.D, Bailey, who had gated mid pack, worked his way through the pack. to finish third while Gary Benton and James Skinner rounded out the top five at the finish. Moto two once again had Martin on the gate, but too soon the R.M racer found himself on the ground in a first-turn pileup, and he was unable to ride out the five-lap moto due to a grip that wouldn't stay on the handlebar. Smith, however, escaped the firsHurn'melee and raced at the head of the class to the finish, followed by Matt Lineman, Brad Cannon, J.D. Bailey and Joe Walker. LCS-backed Jonathan Kerr·and Shorty's Racing's Bryan zachary battled it out in all of their classes, including the 60cc Stock, 60cc Modified, and 80cc Junior events. The best face of the three was in the 23-rider 60cc Stock class. Zachary grabbed the start and held off Kerr on the first lap, but a hard-charging Kerr took the lead on lap two and appeared to keep it to the finish until zachary decided enough was enough and repassed Kerr in the final lap to take the first motowin. The second moto once again saw Zachary out front off the start, but Kerr battled early and battled hard, taking the front position by the end of the first and this time held like glue to the checkered flag. Kerr took the overall prize home , to Aggie land in College Station. Team GreenGKP /Fox/FMF's Chase Reed once again brought attention to himself, winning both motos in the 80cc (12-13) and 80cc Open events, establishing himself as the early points leader for the series, Results 50 (4--8) STK: 1. Derek Hicks (KTM); 2. Rowdy Rohlfs (Lern); 3. Austin Rcden; 4. Weston McCulloch (Lem); 5. Landon RL'Ctor (I
