Sandhill MX
By Dick Archer
BRENTWOOD, CA, APR. 20
Dedicating the event to the memory of Pete
Ford, the Sand hill Ranch hosted round thnee of
the AHRMA/Speed & Sport Vintage MX Series,
at which Ed Zornes absolutely destroyed the
competition in both the Over 40 Expert and
Sportsman 500cc Expert classes, as he propelled
his '74 Yamaha YZ360 to victory in all four
motos.
In the Over 40 Expert class, Zornes the way
in both motos as Doug Grant and Randy Lewis
did their collective best to stay close. Not far
behind them was Mike Haplin and Robert
Hansen, but Zornes' strong starts and steady
riding brought him across the finish line first in
both matos. Grant, Lewis and Haplin went on
with their own fight, especially in moto two
when Grant worked his way up from a poor
start to finish second, and Lewis held off Haplin
to secure third overall. Grant went on to win the
Over 30 Expert division (1-1), and Lewis fought
it out with Dallas Nyblod to win the Sportsman
250cc Expert class.
Zornes was unbeatable in the Sportsman
500cc class, as well. Ron Fish, also aboard a
Yamaha 360, hung with Zornes for a while and
put in a good ride finishing second in both
motos. Jerry Brandt, Robert Hansen, and Rod
DwUvent rounded out the top five.
The Premier SOOcc Expert motos played out
well, as Terry Sage, who finished second to Dick
Mann in moto one, got ahead and stayed ahead
in moto two despite Mann's ~nsistent stalking
throughout the entire moto. Mann made his
move on the last lap, and with Sage in his sights,
tried to make the pass, but Sage beat him to the
corner and took the checker and the overall win
with a 2·1.
Other double-moto winners included Steve
Gibson, who won two sizzling motos over Steve
Parker in the Sportsman 125cc Experts and
Danny Davies in the Over 50 Expert. Doyle
Cook went 1-1 in the Over SO Intermediate division, as did Larry Beaty in the fully gated Over
SO ovice class, and Janet Borg. aboard her CZ
125 and CZ25O, won all four motos in the Classic
12Scc ovice and Women's Intermediate.
