three rode hard and distanced themselves from the rest of the class. Portue kept his BVH/Fox/Pjl/Smith-sponsored Honda in the lead for the first four laps until a momentary lack of concentration allowed both Weichers and Dawson to get by on lap five. Weichers held off Dawson's attempts at a pass and ultimately took the checkers ahead of Dawson's Kawasakj. Portue regained his composure and crossed the finish line in third on his Bass Racing-sponsored SuzukL Moto one of the 250cc Novice race started off better for Dawson. He was able to catch a better gate which produced a much higher second place position at the end of the first lap behind the Wright Motors-sponsored Honda of Waylon Hall. Hall's lead would be short lived, however, as Dawson advanced to the lead on the third lap. Hall battled for the rest of the moto for second with Bob Hicks on a Honda XR. The Rancho M/C Dismantling-sponsored rider showed that a four-stroke can indeed run with the two-strokes. At the checkers, Dawson had a clear victory with Hall holding off Hicks for second. Moto two in the 125cc Novice class looked promising for Portue as he grabbed another holeshot. Behind him there were new faces up front as the Honda's of Brandon jones, Weichers and Steve Thinger foUowed. Dawson again was mired with a rnidpack start and completed the first lap in fifth. On lap two Weichers bailed and Thinger fell off the torrid pace, allowing Dawson to move up to third behind Merced Poser Sports/Guts Racing-sponsored jones. Dawson began a charge on lap four displacing jones for second and finally pushed his Kawasaki into the lead on lap five. There were no changes at the finish and Dawson's 2-1 moto scores were good for the overall. Portues' 3-2 netted him second overall and jones took third via his 4-3 tally. The final moto of the 250cc Novice class saw the Kawasaki of Roseville Cycle-sponsored john Moore in the lead. He was followed by Tom Fields out of Healdsburg and Dawson in third. Dawson had youth on his side during his fourth moto of the evening and on the fourth lap began his charge to the front. He zapped Fields for second and began setting up Moore for a pass. Dawson made his was around a tiring Moore on the fifth lap. When the checkered flag fell it was Dawson aU alone and Moore maintaining second. Hall recovered from a lastplace start and made an amazing recovery for third. Dawson's 1-1 domination left no doubt who was the fastest 250cc Novice rider of the evening. Hall's 2-3 were good for second overall and Moore eamed third with 6-2 finishes. On a side note, Shane Esposito and jeff Brownlee, both on Suzuki's in the 12Scc Pro class, put on an ariel exhibition. They cleared not only the finish line table top jump, but also the following jump another 40 feet down track. Lap after lap they wowed the spectators with their mega leaps. Results 50 BEG: I. J.D. In the second moto, Tarantino took off first but this time lngrande showed new vigor and dogged Tarantino's every move. Ingrande made a pass on lap three with the hard-charging Tarantino right on his tail. Tarantino came back on the sixth lap to again take control, but Ingrande flew past on the following lap. The two traded positions a couple of times during the next lap but at the end of th.e race, it was Ingrande who took the win and prize money.
