Spencer rolls at Village Creek CC By Gary Benton Photo by Darryl Smith VlLLAGE CREEK TX, MAR. 23 Round three of tl,e Texas Cross Country Racing Series was held at Village Creek Motocross Park and former Pro motocrosser Kirk Spencer took the win in the Over 30 Expert class after a 10· year layoff from cross country racing. Wi.th no rain in sight and the temperature in "the 80s the riders were anxious to get under way. Promoter Terry Cordray laid out a short and relatively easy 7-mile course that had only one bad spot - a deep creek crossing that riders could either jump or ride through. Spencer battled with Mark Rakestraw for most of the race with the two taking turns leading until the last lap when Spencer took the lead for good. Rakestraw finished a close second with points leader Adrian Jacobs a distant third and Steve Reavis coming across in fourth. Clay HoensheU was back to his winning ways leading every lap of the Pro race and was never really challenged. KTM-mounted Dean Lane overcame a few early-race crashes to fin;sh about a minute behind HoensheII. The tight and twisty track did not seem to favor Lane's big thumper like the wide-open Gholson track where Lane was unstoppable a few weeks ago. Donnie McMillon rode a consistent pace and was rewarded with a solid third place ·finish. North Texas Yamaha rider Mike Abbott was fourth and S~ott Lohr was fifth. In the A / B class, Aaron Gay was the surprise winne.r after Glen Boyett and Todd Myers both ran out of gas on the last lap. Gay was the leader after one lap with Myers and Boyett close behind. For the next five laps, Boyett and Myers battled wheel to wheel with Gay and Brian Barnes a few minutes behind. Boyett took over the lead on the last lap when the gas disaster struck both the Yama.ha riders. Gay cruised by both the staLled riders for the win with Barnes following in second. Myers was quick to refuel and salvaged a third-place finish. KX-rider Mark McDonald was next in fourth place with Boyett roundin!> out the· field in fifth. Results PRO: 1. Clay Hoenshell (Suz); 2. Stice sizzles at Starwest MX By Tony Alessi MORENO VALLEY, CA, APR. 5 Josh Stice was on fire in the 125cc Beginner class as he dominated both motos to claim the overall victory during the Spring Night Series held at Starwest Motocross Park. Bobby Lee led the way during tl,e start of the first 125cc Begirmer class moto but was swooped by Stice who Rew high over the track double jumps. From that point forward, Stice pointed his CR toward the finish line and easily went on ~ to win the moto. Brice Blair kept his KX singing for a solid second, while early-leader Lee crossed the line in thhd i11 front of Cory Mortansen and Jayson Ehlers. The second mota saw Stice go down in turn two and remount in last place. Mortansen was out front on Ius RM and led for the first half of the moto. Tn the end, Stice picked himself up, dusted off and charged past the enhre field for the moto and overall win. Mo.rtan~n held on to second while Andy Stephens, Ehlers and Lee rounded out the top five. Carlos Gonzalez was king of the 60cc ranks and easily topped a field of over 30 racers. Murray/Bellato take SRA sidecar National By Rick Murray PORTLAND, OR, APR. 27 Rick Murray and partner Heather Bellato won the rain-shortened second round of fhe Sidecar Racers Association Nationa.l series sponsored by Krank 2 0, Barnett Tool & Engineering and Hack'd Magazine. The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association provided time for the event in their club series at Portland InternatiQnal Raceway. Rain threatened aLI weffind and reared its head on Saturday night, leaving the track qmte wet for Sunday's races as another front moved in. As the two-man teams made the first sighting lap, the rooster tails from the rear tires shot 20 feet in the air as all of the haCks came slipping around to line up for the start. As the flag dropped the teams launched into the wet with Frank Riolo/Victor Bernasconi leading into turn ol1e followed by Pete Essaffl Art Morris, Murray/Belletto, and Ed Ramones/Craig Evans. On lap two, Beyor I Crueger edged by Ramonesl Evans in the twisty back area to take pver third. Lap three saw Essaff I Morri;; get passed by Murray I Belletto, Hal Beyor/Dennis Crueger and Rarnones/Evans, dropping them to fifth. On lap fou( lliolo/Bemascoru did a couple of grass-bound 36as coming out of turn four, letting three te.ams by. The new team of Tim .Coughlin I Dawna Hollway ran a good race with consistent lines only to be sidelined- with a mecharucal problem. On lap five Beyor/Crueger slid out, moving Essaff / Morris to second, Ramones/Evans to third and the hard-charging Riolo/ Bernasconi to fourth. Comi.ng out o·f turn nine on lap six, Essaff/Morris lost traction first to the right, then to the left whkh f1jpped the hack over onto the track. The alert comer workers flipped the outfit over and Essaff popped out. He and Morris then pushed the outfit off to a standing ovation f~om the large crowd. . The race was stopped due to the incident and since the race was haI£ over, the results stood, with Essaff/Morris being put to last place due to causing the red Rag. Murray/Bellato finished first, with Ramones/Evans and lliolol Bemascoru rounding out the top three. Results SOCA R: I. Rick Murray / Heather BelleUo (Kllw); 2. Ed Ramonell/Craig· Evans (Hon); 3.
